Heard a whisper that the CV of one Marcelo Salas has landed on the Mariners desk.
Doing a check of his history: BIRTH DATE : 24/12/1974 PASSPORT: Chile
CLUBS · 2005-2006 : UNIVERSIDAD DE CHILE, Chile, D1 · 2003-2005 : RIVER PLATE, Argentina, D1 · 2001-2003 : JUVENTUS F.C, Italy, D1 2002: Champion of Italy 2003: Champion of Italy, Winner of the Italian Super Cup · 1998-2001 :LAZIO ROMA, Italy, D1 1998: Winner of Italian Super Cup 2000: Champion of Italy Winner of the Italian Cup Winner of the Italian Super Cup · 1996-1998 : RIVER PLATE, Argentina, D1 97: Champion of Argentina Best Footballer of America · 1993-1996 : UNIVERSIDAD DE CHILE, Chile, D1 94&95: Champion of Chile NATIONAL TEAM CHILE 1998: World Cup in France, 1/8 Finalist 35 goals with the national team
Now that would be a marquee!
Wonder if JC has anything to do with it?

He would destroy this league on so many levels. The bandwagon that would come up the F3 from the Chilean contingent of Sydney would be massive.

although he is a great name i dont know if he would be worth it as a marquee. not many of the non footballing public would know him, he is not young anymore and career seems to be on the downhill. i am sure he will be trialled first and lawrie and co will make the right decision.

All other things (salary, fitness levels etc....) being equal, I'm sure he'd be a good signing. Marquee signings have had a bit of a mixed history in the A-league so far, but as one of the people on this forum who still have doubts about how well stocked we are in the forwards department, I think he may well be worth a go.
Agree that a trial period would be an absolute necessity, although there have been stories in the past of big name players who've deemed that kind of thing beneath them, so if the rumour is to be believed, let's hope that wouldn't put him off.

Agree that a trial period would be an absolute necessity, Salas is the kind of guy who would literally spit in your face at request of a trial. For a player of his calibre that's rather insulting tbh. He's still doing the business in Sth America - he'd do very well here as a #9.

jaza beat me to it - an australian club asking someone like salas to trial would offend them to no end.
I think Singo would have to be responsible for any marquees and if he doesn't know the name, he probably won't go for it.
Likewise, is Lawrie ready to have someone 'bigger' than him at the club?
Doesn't seem likely to me.

If this guy wants as much money/transfer fee as he wanted on FM07 we cant afford him without offloading a few players. In saying tat he is a quality player and just a rumour of a player of this calibre being on an A-league teams desk is saying alot for the league. Singo does have a few dollars up his pocket and you could possibly give viddie a coaching job and a small wage under the cap.

I'll admit that I don't know a lot about him. However after looking at his goal-scoring record and past achievements, i'd love to have him here.

Salas was a brilliant striker a few years ago. If he is half the player he was then i'd love to have him. I doubt it will happen though, I imagine he is asking for a lot of money

Would be brilliant if it is true... and within the budget. Don't like our chances, but you can't help thinking "if only..."

I must say I'd like the club to definately have a close look at him.
I love Tony Vidmar - he's in my top 3 all-time favourite socceroos - but with the standard of the league no doubt set to increase *again* next season, I don't think he's marquee material any more - as harsh as that may sound. I think something needs to worked out, so that the he gets the original amount of money promised (whether it be coaching gig, developmental etc etc), and let us look very very close at Salas or another marquee.

Coaster agree with you completely. If Singleton is prepared to put up for a marquee player and Vidmar is the team player we all think he is. if the right proposition comes along that enables us to have Vidmar AND a marquee player of marquee quality then let singo put up and let's get on with getting the player we need whethe it be Salas or whoever. More bums on seats is what we need and the right marquee will do that in v3 for us as well as putting us at the pointy end of the table at the end of the year.
