I'm pretty sure Lawrie or Lyall have said that Vidmar will be Marquee next season. Love to see him here, but I doubt it.

bring it on, the guy is a potent weapon even at half best he would tear the league apart, but like most have said he would surely cost heaps and would there be a return on the investment with additional bums on seats and sponsorships? i am not sure, thats for the club to work out the maths - i suck at maths anyway

$1.6m a year x (say) 10 home games.
Thats an extra $160,000 a game to cover his costs (assuming no corporate sponsorship)
We would have to sell out every week just to cover his costs........unlikely.
A Marquee of that expense would have to be well known enough to drag an extra 10,000 people out to Bluetongue.
Now, someone well known to the non attending public who would cost maybe half that...........

selling out 10 games is unlikely no matter who the marquee i think, it would have to be a sponsored deal - remembering that from ticket sales you need to deduct venue costs as well

The key is that the marquee would be paid outside the usual funding i think. The sort of thing Singo would throw some money at. But a marqee is used for more than getting bums on seats. It builds a brand. And clubs are brands. The very prospect of the likes of salas playing in gosford make me a very happy man. He is such a great player, and it shows how far the game has come here. That a great of the game, who turned out for the national team alot, and played in huge clubs lik Juve, would want to play at the coast, at just 32, you have to love that

Hmmm signing him on past performances without a trial, I am sure the ex-spirit fans amongst us remember the name Nicola Berti

Hmmm signing him on past performances without a trial, I am sure the ex-spirit fans amongst us remember the name Nicola Berti You don't even have to go that far back, Blackadder, the HALs had a few duds too. Brian Deane for Perth was a disaster, and Romario was a pedestrian for Adelaide last season. Luckily for Adelaide, Romario was only guesting and they just had to grit their teeth and smile for a few weeks while he slowed them down on the field. I think the upshot of the success of the A-League is that it is fast becoming less of a working holiday destination for wandering old footballers, and more so of a serious national domestic competition. You have to be quite committed to come to Australia and play in HAL, I feel, and fit to play at our level. Anything less and you may find your reputation being torn to shreds. Carbonne guested well for Sydney, and Yorke did well in v1, but the emphasis is upon being fully comitted to playing full bore, not some sideshow attraction. Thankfully.

Salas is playing in Chile's top division this/last season isnt he? No need to trial him, just get some tapes of the games, and give him a physical. He isnt 38 like deane or anything. he is 32.
