Airplane Two Too Much For Seo
Jon Ritson Jul 20 2007 12:23 Get more on: seo | roar | aleague Queensland Roar’s Hyuk-Su Seo will miss this weekend's pre-season Cup clash because the two-flight trip is too gruelling for him. The influential midfielder has been left behind in Brisbane while the rest of the squad heads for chilled Orange ahead of the Pre-Season Cup clash with Central Coast Mariners.
At least David Beckham will be able to offer a sympathetic ear, with air travel also responsible for throwing his long-awaited LA Galaxy debut into doubt.
Becks’ injury was aggravated by the switch from Spain to California (air travel causes swelling) and a promotional trip this week was also thrown into doubt because it involved flying.
As for the Roar, the trip from Suncorp to Orange venue involves two flights and it has been decided that it is a jet too far for the Korean.
Coach Frank Farina said: “It’s a precautionary thing with Hyuk-Su. Orange is an unusual trip in that there are two flights to catch.
“Ascending and descending twice in one day is not great for the body as it can cause swelling. Plus, we expect conditions in Orange to be a bit cold to say the least, so we’re leaving him behind this time. He’ll be fine for New Zealand next week.”
Farina will also be without Marcinho (groin) but the Brazilian should also be in line for a return next week against Wellington Phoenix.
Another member of the Roar crocks club is also making steps along the road to recovery.
Robbie Kruse, who suffered a severe facial injury at training last week, has undergone successful surgery to repair his fractured cheekbone and eye-socket.
Roar physio Tony Ganter said: “Robbie’s surgery went well and he had a titanium plate inserted into his face just to reinforce the bone and hold everything together.
“It’s not much thicker than a photograph so shouldn’t bother him at all. He’ll be right to get back into it in about six weeks so it’s all gone pretty well.”

20 July 2007 Central West Daily Mariners determined to break Orange goal drought By BRENDAN ARROW
Central Coast Mariners coaching staff Alex Tobin, Lawrie McKinna (head coach) and Ian Ferguson are confident Orange's goal drought will be broken this weekend. Central Coast Mariners coaching staff Alex Tobin, Lawrie McKinna (head coach) and Ian Ferguson are confident Orange's goal drought will be broken this weekend.
THE wait is almost over for football fans with just one day to go before the Central Coast Mariners look to break Orange's goal scoring drought against the Queensland Roar at Wade Park.
Having scored two goals against Wellington Phoenix FC in the first round of the Hyundai A-League Pre-Season Cup, Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna is confident fans will not be disappointed tomorrow.
"For a first-up game it went very well as we created quite a few chances and played some good football," McKinna said.
"Getting the bonus point was an extra little surprise for scoring the two goals so we ended up on four points at the top of the table."
Against the Phoenix new captain Alex Wilkinson scored his first goal in 61 appearance for the Mariners before Adam Kwasnik doubled the lead on the half hour.
It was a monkey that Wilkinson was happy to get off his back.
"It is always good to get a goal (but) it doesn't really matter who scores them as long as someone in the team scores them and we get the result," he said.
The central defender is positive his side will be just as clinical in front goal at Wade Park tomorrow despite the colder conditions.
"We started off with two goals last week and probably should have scored a few more," he said.
"We are creating the chances so hopefully we get at least one and possibly a few more."
Central Coast will field a new look team tomorrow as McKinna looks to find a balanced side for the start of the Hyundai A-League.
"Dean Heffernan will come back in," McKinna said. "Heff has just got back from Germany so he'll come into the starting line-up.
"Tony Vidmar has been left back in Sydney with the 'flu so young Nigel Boogaard, who came off the bench (against Phoenix), will start as well."
Matthew Trott will also start in goal for regular custodian Danny Vukovic.
McKinna added he will be looking for his team to continue their attacking style of football through the the pre-season cup.
"We created a lot of chance, just our final pass let us down," he said. "We tried the hard one rather than the simple pass."We worked on that all week so hopefully this weekend we can continue the goal scoring and hopefully knock over Queensland."
Orange fans are itching to see goals tomorrow after the Mariners and Adelaide United struggled to cope with a hard and bouncy Wade Park in a nil-all draw last year.
Speaking from a training camp in Bathurst yesterday, Wilkinson said if he side did the simple things right the Central Coast would be able to nullify the Roar tomorrow.
"Mostly we need to keep possession of the ball, the Roar have a very quick midfield and can catch you on the counterattack," he said.
"So if we can keep the ball and turn it into scoring opportunities I think we will be all right."
The match between the Central Coast Mariners and the Queensland Roar kicks off at Wade Park at 3pm tomorrow.
