I can already tell you the (hideously planned) lineup: -----------------------Bolton McFlynn------Rudan---Popovic-------Fyfe ----------Milligan----------------Talay Biddle--------------Juninho------------Corica -----------------------Brosque I guess it's predictable that Corica gets shunted sideways to allow Juninho the playmaker role. Will probably sound a bit odd, but I reckon Juninho has quite big boots to fill there. I've always felt that if you shut down Corica, you go a long way to shutting down Sydney as a team. The guy is a class act as far as I'm concerned, and I wouldn't be surprised if he takes the role back if things aren't going according to plan, and Juninho is struggling.

Aye but if Juninho plays like he did v.s. Penriff someone taking a back seat to him just has to be done.

Corica's go isn't making runs into the box all day, it's about dropping into areas defenders don't want to go. I haven't seen Biddle play, but I just wonder how much support Brosque will get because Boogs or Viddie could easily keep him under wraps leaving Wilko to clean up everything else.
I still reckon set pieces is the main danger from whoninho.

That way you have one spare defender. With a back three you either have your wingbacks dropping back to mark the wingers, and two spare defenders (too many!) or your back three getting dragged every which way to cover counterattacks with wingbacks up the field. In general though, what you have posted is definitely the best formation for our players with one of Boogs, Clarky or O'Grady in that third defensive spot.

I think we will start the same as we did on Friday except for Trotty..............
-----------------------------Vukovic Osman----------Boogs----------Wilko-----------Heff Kwas-------------Jedi-----------Gumps--------Tommy --------------------Mrdja--------Petrovski
Trott Owens Vidmar and take your pick for the last spot

In theory, for our players, it's the 3-5-2 all the way.
But in the rough and tumble, super quick, direct A-League, 4-4-2 is a bit of a must to be honest. A formation to suit the league rather than to suit the players has probably been necessary.
With the influx of Brazilians and the exposure of Sydney and Adelaide to the cultured ACL, will things slow down a bit this year, will we see more ball possession and build up play, and will things therefore be more accommodating for a back three? Let's hope so!

By David Davutovic
August 20, 2007 12:00am
SYDNEY FC are still smarting from their Asian Champions League exit and they intend to vent their frustration at the Central Coast in Friday's season opener at Sydney Football Stadium.
Branko Culina's team would have been preparing for next month's quarter-finals having added marquee man Juninho, World Cup defender Tony Popovic, Brazilian striker Patrick da Silva to a 22-man squad.
Instead FC are focused solely on Friday's A-League opener against the Mariners - a game Culina is placing huge importance on - as they attempt to qualify for the 2009 tournament.
"It was a wonderful chance for us to win the group and go to the next stage and you can't just wipe that from your memory," Culina conceded.
"We can only blame ourselves because if you have a look at a few games, we really should've won the group and with the addition of new talent we would've given it a shake.
"But that's in the past. It's an opportunity lost and we've got to move on and start all over again and prove ourselves once more."
Culina wants his team to come out breathing fire on Friday night, insisting a good start is crucial in a 21-round season.
"People say it's a long season but that first game is vital because it can give you that much needed confidence for the rest of the campaign," he said.
"A win puts you in a position where you can look forward to the next game knowing that you got off to a good start - it's mental more than anything."
Patrolling the midfield will be Mark Milligan, the revelation of the Asian Cup.
Culina said that even though Milligan would miss games through Olyroo and possibly Socceroo commitments, he could ill afford to lose his 22-year-old utility.
"It was absolutely huge, we could ill afford to lose David Carney and Mark Milligan. From last season we lost Alvin Ceccoli and Sasho Petrovski," Culina said.
"It's all very well talking about gaining Popovic and Juninho, but when you lose two other internationals, what have you gained?
"In the time that I've been here Mark hasn't played in a game that we've lost. We only lost once and guess who didn't play? Mark.
"I've had a word to Mark and one of the reasons he was made vice-captain was that he wanted to pledge his future, for this season at least, to Sydney FC.
"Once that was established it was easy for me to make that decision because he shows an enormous amount of leadership for a young bloke."
Brazilian star Juninho is on track to start after impressing in Friday's practice match against Penrith.
He believes Sydney has the talent to claim the A-League crown this season.
"You always have to think big and when you have players like Tony Popovic and Corica, we have a good squad which is good enough to win the title," Juninho said.
"But we don't have to say much, we have to do it on the pitch."
Asked if he was right to start, he said: "If it's up to me I'd play every game. I played only 45 minutes and it gave me an idea of how I'm going and I think in two or three games everybody and not just me will be fit."
Culina is not shying away from the heavy expectations that rest on his team's shoulders.
He believes Melbourne will be thereabouts but hopes for competition's sake that it's closer than last season when Victory ran away with the minor premiership.
"Melbourne Victory, Adelaide, Sydney - they should be thereabouts because they've got the depth," he said.
"Wellington, Perth or Central Coast might hit the ground running, but if they get a couple of injuries or Olyroo commitments, are they be able to cover?"

The last two paragraphs made me laugh so hard.
Culina is obviously taking the piss if he thinks his squad has any depth and the Mariners do not.

we have a natural man-marker for attacking mids in jedinak - did a job on carle and can easily contain an under-prepared juninho will be interesting to see how far forward biddle plays to try and nulify the heff threat i just cannot see how their rigid defence will be able to cope with our pace and mobility - heff, tommy, gumps, kwas and nik it should leave plenty of holes for sasho, who will be so so pumped and tommy always plays out of his skin against sydney - must be the melbourne boy in him mariners by two

Who's fired up?? Who seriously cannot contemplate the thought of three more football free days (including today)?? Who is so damn glad that the hideous bitch we call "the off season" is nearly over?? Who is going to sing their arses off come Friday night and redefine the very notion of 'away support' when we absolutely spank Sydney all over the park??
If the answer to all of those questions isn't "everyone", then WHY NOT?!?
FIRE THE FARK UP ALREADY, IT'S NEARLY HERE!!!!
(yes, I am excited)
