This match last season was a true summary of the whole season - some enterprising play, dominated possession, poor finishing, two sitters missed by kwassy, brilliant display by opposition goalkeeper.
I dare say that this match will also give us a good indication of where we are at for the season. It's a bold call but if we do not beat Sydney we could be in for another tough season.
There is no better time to play Sydney. They have had a limited preseason preperation after the ACL. A chunk of their starting eleven have only been training for a couple of weeks and they on struggle street injury wise.
Round one is really a must win for our confidence.
My starting eleven: GK: Danny (will be available) RB: Osman (has been excellent at RB preseason and just shades Clarky) CB: Wilko (needs to step his game up this season because his preseason has been average) CB: Vidmar (his class when he came on was evident. We need his leadership and experience at the back and with two more weeks under his belt he just shades Boogs) LB: Heff (again, two weeks and he should be good) RM: Kwassy (we need his pace and explosiveness on the right) DCM: Mile (picks himself for this position) ACM: Tommy (our only true playmaker and we need him in a position of influence) LM: Browny (has been our best player preseason and his freekicks are a massive asset) S: Sasho and Nik (disappointed that they have had little game time together preseason but their partnership is the key to the Mariner season.
Subs Trotty (really putting some pressure on Danny) Boogs (unlucky to miss out but we really do need Viddy at the back) Clarky (a whisker from replacing Ossy) Gumps (misses out because he can only play centre mid) Owens (shades Simon for a bench position on the basis of his versatility)

Agree with the starting line up but I think Lawrie may go with Tommy on the right and Gumps in the middle? Not sure if I agree that this game will make or break our season but understand where you are coming from in terms of confidence. Also agree that this is the best time to play Sydney........Juninho and Corica etc may not be match sharp and they have had a poor pre-season, so it's definitely a great opportunity to get off to a great start for V3. Anyone planning to travel down for this game keep updated on marinators.net for travel information

I've also heard rumours that Juninho is treating his stay here so far as a bit of a holiday and has been a little lazy in training?
Any truth in that 1 Jaza?

Mick, very close but, like DJ, I think Gumps will stay in the middle but with Tommy on for Browny. I think Browny will start from the bench and replace either LB or LM.

I think Browny will start from the bench and replace either LB or LM. it will probably happen as you said but i don't believe it should browny has been brilliant preseason and deserves his spot - his set pieces are also important to the team the last two weeks has clearly shown we miss a true playmaker in the middle - someone that can dictate play and only tommy is capable of this as much as i love gumps has he had any influence over the past two weeks? he has been shackled by a man-marker on both occasions and has not had the mobility to shake this marker

Tommy in the middle gives us so much more creativity, I would also drop Gumps but I just don't think Lawrie will for this game anyway.
Gumps had a good game in Canberra against Sydney and I think that will help him keep his spot.
Still 11 days to go anyway so players could (god forbid) pick up a knock in training and it would all change.

Mick, Gumps was on fire vs. Sydney at Canberra, and unless Sydney play Milligan against him, there's no reason why he shouldn't be as dominant. Trott also deserves the goalie spot ahead of Danny who had a bad game last night and Trott was very consistent and in form vs. Sydney in that Canberra game too. I'd also play Gumps on first but Tommy to come in last 25 minutes or so. Browny and Heff have a good combo going on the left side, if Brown needs replacing, is Owens capable of playing 20 or so minutes on the left midfield?

I'm going to disagree on a few key positions
Trotts in goal, Danny has been way off his game. Putting him on the bench will be a big wake-up call.
Wilko at right back. If you want to teach a central defender that they need to move more, stick them out wide where they have no choice. Apart from that I think that Vidmar and Boogs are our best central defenders at the moment and although Osman has been good at RB in pre-season I think we'd be better off with a natural defender in that position. Having Osman on the bench gives us more flexibility to change as the match warrants.
Gumpy has to be in central midfield. Tommy on the bench. Gumpy is fit and hence will run all game, which is exactly what is needed in that position. Plus Tommy used correctly is a fantastic impact player.
And I'm not entirely convinced with Heffernan, both of the second half goals yesterday came down our left hand side. His runs have been great but I think his defending needs a little work.

Mick - I'd also love to pick his brain...... more specifically as to why nearly every substitution he's ever made involves taking the best player on the field off (invariably Pondeljak or Gumps) and completely destroying whatever midfield cohesion there was. Maybe it's a Scottish thing, I don't know - I'd still like to know why he does it though.
Prime example was last night - Simon was playing really well, making inroads from midfield into scoring positions, while my mate Kwasnik was doing...... well, not much, yet Simon is the one who gets subbed. I've never understood Lawrie's subbing methods (and why they come really late most of the time).
