He wouldnt come to the Mariners as a striker, he would be the central midfielder/playmaker...

Which begs the question - do we really need him - i.e. another attacking playmaker, or another striker, which he can also play as? And if so, could we do better than him? We've got the likes of Petrovski and Simon most likely for next season, Aloisi's a chance, and Mrdja if he returns fit for next season with us - and we do know that if fit, Mrdja really CAN play.
Midfield - Owens, Jedinak (reportably club wants him to sign another contract...), Tommy P, Gumpy (I rate him, and IMO one of the better midfielders in the league, sub or starter), Kwasnik, Hutch, Porter...
Hmm... we do have quite a few there, so do we need him?
And if we get him, he will either play well, attract more people, etc, so forth, or act as it is a holiday or age will catch up with him, plays badly, the spectale of him dwindles, money down the drain.
I think however that as the club has done well so far with signings, they will make the right choice, and not become a 'Con C.'' case
Note that this rumour has been on going since he left - has returned this time as we have Turnbull, and as stated, Yorke and Turnbull have remained in contact since Yorke's release. Remains to be seen how serious Dwight is on coming.

I heard somewhere that Lyall Gorman wants to form a 'deadly strikeforce' with Aloisi and Yorke

Hmmm no doubt Yorke is up to EPL standards but wasn't overly impressive IMHO in his time with Sydney, looked more like he was here for a paid holiday. he was still a class above the rest. Didn't show it on the field, can't recall anything that stands out as special that Dwight did for Sydney, prehaps due to a dud manager or then again maybe not.

Nothing that any other player couldn't do, and hardly justified his price tag

LG was interviewed on Foxsports news this afternoon.
Is meeting Yorkes' agent in London as part of a wider ranging fact finding mission to meet other agents (to discuss players) and various clubs to discuss possible tie ups.

Remains to be seen how serious Dwight is on coming. Good points howeva we thought we were strong and solid up front this yr but we soon lost mrdja and had to hire mori and aloisi.Tommy is a good chance of retirering so is gumps that frees up alot of coin and mrdja will be taking a pay cut aswell. If yorke does come he knows he'll be taking a pay cut but from the rumours sounds like he's willing to accept that i say bring it on .Either way he 'll make a great provider for aloisi or if aloisi leaves(big chance ) he'd be the sort of player that could come in handy mids and striker options. He'd be very handy this week with our injurys and suspensions. Another option is available theres alot of talk bout his coaching abilitys so if we have a full squad he can sit out and when we start our injury run that we always have fill in. Also looking on to next season we will be potentially VERY VERY light up front worst case mrdja doesn't get fit Aloisi leaves and possibly even sash i dont think he'd guarenteed is he?? that leaves young matty simon i'm glad they have started looking for some attacking options for next year!!! Having said that imagine the $$$$$$$ we would have without those guys we could just about afford DROGBA ;D

At present we have one AM playmaker, Tommy. Hutch holds the ball well, Owens runs at players well, our strikers are starving for quality ball. LB and AM are the two positions that need strengthening.

www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,22857167-23215,00.html Yorke link premature: Mariners By Cameron Tomarchio December 02, 2007 CENTRAL Coast Mariners executive chairman Lyall Gorman will meet Dwight Yorke and his agent in London this week but says any talk of the 'smiling assassin' returning to the A-League is premature. Former Manchester United striker Yorke, who led Sydney FC to the inaugural A-League title in 2005-2006, comes off contract with English Premier League club Sunderland in mid-2008. But Gorman said the Mariners' priorities lay with current marquee player Tony Vidmar and star signing John Aloisi, with both players' contracts expiring at the end of the season. "I'll be catching up with Dwight and (his agent) Simon Bayliff in London this week as part of a 12-day trip which will see us visiting several player managers, half a dozen clubs in the UK and two or three in Europe,'' said Gorman. "But let's put this into context. We've got a major obligation to our existing marquee player Tony Vidmar and we're currently in discussions with Tony about his future with the club. "We've also got John Aloisi in our ranks and we've certainly been very impressed with John and his contribution both on and off the field. "We'll be pursuing very active talks with John with regards to his future so it would be very premature to consider that we'll be signing another high profile player of any nature - whether it's Dwight or anyone else.'' Fairfax newspapers reported that 36-year-old Yorke would command less than half the $1 million he earned before leaving Sydney FC, and the Mariners planned to split his salary in two to keep him inside the salary cap - $150,000 as a coach and $300,000 as a player. "Anything's possible in this world with regard to salary caps and service agreements and the different things you can do but that discussion has not been had in our club,'' added Gorman. "This is purely an exploratory trip for me and the club just to see what activity is happening on a global basis, both in terms of player movement and also in terms of talking to clubs in terms of potential partnerships, whether it's an academy partnership, an overseas investment or just a player swap arrangement. "So we've got a whole raft of reasons for the trip and meeting with Simon and Dwight is just one of those.'' According to Fairfax, Yorke has promised Mariners shareholder Peter Turnbull that Central Coast will have first option if he severs ties with Sunderland next June. Turnbull, formerly of Sydney FC, was a key figure in luring Yorke to the A-League in 2005.

Woops it's me 3rd post in a row but looks like were not getting Yorke.... au.fourfourtwo.com/news/66150,angry-lawrie-no-dwight-deal.aspx Angry Lawrie: 'No Dwight Deal' Exclusive: Furious Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna says the club knows nothing about the reported signing of Dwight Yorke – and the Coast boss lays the blame at the journalist in question. “There's nothing in it at all," he said today. "We're in the middle of re-signing players just now and getting our squad sorted for next season. "I'm sure Dwight's got a lot on his plate too over there at Sunderland to be thinking about playing for the Mariners. “[Coast chairman] Lyall Gorman had a coffee with Dwight maybe six or seven months ago. That's all. "And he's going overseas next week and part of that trip will be to have a chat with some of Yorke's representatives, but to say he's signing for us, it's disappointing." He added: “First thing I knew was when I read about it. I've spoken to our chairman and he's had to go on Fox Sports to deny it. "There's nothing behind it. It's not an agent getting carried away, it's the journalist.” The story of Yorke's alleged signature for next season popped up this weekend in the Fairfax press. It went into details about the salary Yorke would command, where he'd live and how he'd contribute to the club's coaching structure. Meanwhile, McKinna says the washout on Saturday night against Sydney FC was a blessing in disguise for his players. “We were looking a wee bit flat," he admitted. "It's probably a blessing as we can freshen up ahead of the match against Roar next week so it came at a good time. "And we could have the likes of Tommy Pondeljak and Nigel Boogard back from injury next week.”

Its all speculation but I'd have him at the drop of a hat.
From my viewpoint, even if we win the entire thing, I would have concerns that Aloisi will be fed up with the service or lack of that he is getting. We need a midfielder who can create. Jedi is great but we lack that creative spark. Yorke would fulfill this...

I doubt very much that money will be used to sign Yorke, IMO secure John Aloisi as our marquee and look around for some very good HAL players coming off contract this year.
I would like us to sign a quick winger who can deliver a good ball, and a creative attacking midfielder.......IMO we have still been lacking in this year during V3

Whatever happens, we need to get Aloisi good service. this is a must, he is here, and if we use him well, and he is happy, he will stay. I think the only thing we need to do to keep him happy is to give him as much quality ball as we can. ANy creativity boost in midfield, deep or attacking would be what we need IMO.
