From today's Football Fever: All is not well up in Newcastle, and we don't mean the Knights. Despite public displays of support, we hear the coaching staff had little to do with the signing or Mario Jardel and aren't overly enamoured with having to fit him in the team. "He can hardly move," one insider reports of a striker engaged on the whim of owner Con Constantine. Gary Van Egmond is also acutely aware of the hole left in his dressing room by losing big personalities Paul Okon, Nick Carle and Tim Brown. It's a big test for a young coach. There is a nice 'fans eye' in football fever by Brett Tailor. Not sure who that is. Lots of positive Mariners coverage at least! yeah, forgot to mention that one great work brett and you managed to have a dig at newcastle in the process

I thought the penalty against wellington was harsh (not just saying this because Cleberson is in my Fantasy squad - or was) I think Melbourne kicked the ball into his hand (which is something they have done before, in fact against NZ) which really shouldn't be given, but the joy of football is that part in the law that says "...if in the referee's opinion..." i disagree, cleberson leaned towards the ball and moved his arm in its direction. it was hand-to-ball. Spot on Dibo. It was a definite penalty.

Looks like it was long enough for VE to drop Drovandi from the squad for the 2nd round, along with Elrich.

I think despite our flogging of them, Wellington has had the most luck with Brazillians maybe apart from Cassio at Adelaide

Its also true what Peter Turnbull said, that the A League is mean't for Australian players to find their footing and for Australia to find its place in World Soccer not to foster for second rate or washed up South Americans

Daniel was absolutely shit last night. Felipe added spark when he came on, providing a bit of flair and even striking the crossbar.

I think the "you are Brazillian, therefore you must be good" craze sweeping the HAL is daft.
The little midget bloke at SFC is costing them $1m a season FFS. You think they might have been able to buy a striker for that $$. Something they have missed since V1. As for Remo doing searches on FM07 for unknown Brazillians.................
Daniel would struggle to get a game at State league level. He is shite.

Patrick seems useless.... whixh makes him a perfect fit for sydney. I actually thought he was alright when he came on. After his substitution for Tony Popovic, the tempo of the game increased a fair bit. A fair amount of that was from his introduction. He's quick, good in the air and seemed to drop deep a fair bit. So IMO, besides his howler (Which after seeing again, looked to have bobbled up in front of him, causing it to hit his knee), he seems to be a pretty decent signing. It is one they've needed Sydney, they need a striker like him, because without Juninho and Corica, they didn't seem to offer a whole lot going forward. Now that they've attempted to fix their problems in the final third, they need to sort out their defence, and do it quick. Without Popovic and Milligan they were woeful at the back. You just need to see a replay of Nathan Burns' goal for proof.

I guess if you throw enough offers out to a particular area, some maybe lucky to find their mark.

I love the guy already where did you start that thread? Its not racist. Racist is stating that they should not allow players into the A League because they are South American. Teams should hire their 4 overseas players on the basis they are bringing some kind of influence and experience to the A League like Andre for instance played in one of Germany's top clubs, Bayer Leverkusen as well as others. I hope his experiences and what he learnt there is being taught to the younger mariners players. I hate to say it but Dwight, Benito Carbone and maybe Juninho are other prominant examples of this. although with how Sydney has been run since V1 i doubt it with the last 2. Denni, Drovandi, Marcinho and most of the others are not in this league. They are no better than the standard you would get from many within the A League.

Here And my main point and view on it.... Didnt mention anything about selling out... I just feel a swell of pride for the mariners when i see the 11 men take the field knowing that they grew up on Australian food, learned to play on Australian grass and most of all, got their shot at the big time from Australian fans. Id hate to see most of these 11 spots be replaced by an influx of overseas stars, potentially taking away that shot from a local kid, because isnt that really what the a-league is all about? Long story short, i dont want the A-league heavyweights to be determined by who has the best scout in brazil (Yes Mr Merrick, im talking to you), i want it to be determined by who has the best community strength, the highest team cognition and passion and most of all, the team that does whats best for its supporters, not its sponsors..., all these things really come to mind when i think of the Mariners and i guess it all comes down to local pride, we have plenty of it here on the Coast. Bring on all your foreign players that cant even speak english, we are waiting!

The wankfest in the Sydney media continued yesterday about Juninho...... if they were going to be fair about excellent through balls and top gear in the box, then Mrdja would have had a double spread all by himself. Are they trying to justify the waste of money by giving him all that paper space one good pass??

SAOR (South American Of the Round)= Juninho or Denni.
Both of these players were at the centre of everything their respective teams created.
Juninho hit the post twice and set-up the goal For Brosque with a neat pass through the defence. Sydney will be praying that his shoulder injury isn't as bad as first thought.
Denni was more flashy than brilliant. He delighted the crowd with his step-overs and tricks and he almost won it for them in the 89th minute with his near-post shot. Far better than he was in Perth IMO.

With 26 foreign players this year out of 8 clubs, how many are better than Aussies? My guess is say 6. The other 20 are keeping the next Nathan Burns or Mark Milligan from EVER appearing. How many of us know guys that were fantastic players, didn't get the chance at the right place at the right time and then had to make the choice everyone has to make - "oh well, I better go to Uni/work/tech then, f**k it"
Love the Yorkes, Carbones, Juninhos, Freds - but PLEASE leave the Reinaldos of the world back in Brazil. If i see one more of these blokes do 3 stepovers, and then kick it out, with Cockerill saying "oh what skill, excuse me pass the KY, aggggh" I'll SCREAM.

Would love to see some smarty pants Sth American playing around mid game with the ball like that, and either Boogs or Jedi size him up, sweep the ball from out of his feet and then smash him into the turf on follow through. If they stand still long enough that's achievable. There's a time and place for posing and a time and place for doing the basics very well and being consistent.
