Warnie is expected to announce his retirement at a press conference tomorrow. Article from the SMHAustralia's greatest cricketer of the modern era, Shane Warne, will announce his retirement from international cricket tomorrow, effective from the end of the Sydney Test. Warne will almost certainly take his 700th Test wicket at his home ground, the Melbourne Cricket Ground, during the forthcoming Boxing Day Test. It is thought that Warne viewed this as fitting way to close the book on one of the most celebrated, and controversial, careers of all-time. Warne, 37, is Test cricket's leading wicket-taker and in 2000 was named one of Wisden's five cricketers of the century. He is expected to accept a position on the Channel Nine commentary team after the Sydney Test. Warne's career has been blighted by a number of sex scandals, a bookmaking controversy and a positive drug test, for which he served a 12-month suspension. In tomorrow's paper - Peter Roebuck on the genius of Warne, Warne's career highlights - and lowlights, the reaction and his career stats. He did hint to this with a comment he made at the end of the WACA test "I'm closer to the end" he may be a complete idiot off the field but on the field dead set legend and will be missed.

Stewie McGill will be the happiest person in the country when warnie retires
But seriousally, it will be the end of an era, no matter what he has done off the pitch, on the pitch he is argueably the best bowler to grace the game. I remember as a young kid starting out cricket i wanted to be a spinner just like warne, i looked up to him, shame i am shit bowler, it is a real shame to hear that he will retire at the end of the sydney test. I know he hasnt said he will retire yet but it will be a real shame to see a ledgend like him go.

He may be the greatest spinner in the world, and I agree with those that say he is, but he is a disgrace to Australian and should have been banned from playing for the national side a long time ago IMO. I know there are going to be a number who disagree with me on this, quite vehemently I don't doubt, but he is a disgrace from the stuff he has done in the past.
That is just MY opinion of course.

He is a larrikin. i do feel sorry for his wife who he has obviously treated badly but everyone makes mistakes. he does a lot of charity stuff and apart from be a freakishly skilful bowler, he has an excellent cricket brain - his only regret will be that had he behaved better he would have been captain when tubby retired.

I know its just your opinion but some of the off field stuff he has done has been a disgrace but there are plenty of people who do things like that all around the world and it just happens to be that warne is famous and the media make it bigger than what it really is. The last few things that were in the paper last year eirler this year were bigger than what they really were and was just women trying to get money out of the english press when at that stage he wasnt married any more. Warne has his own charity foundation and he does alot of good things behind the scenes. Its just nobody sees that side of him that often before the media put it out there that he is a guy that sends txt messages to women and cheats on his wife, when thats just him, He didnt commit any crimes, take drugs or start drunken fights in clubs, its his personal life and it gets thown out there in the media because he is such a famous player, and all credit to him for ignoreing all that and getting on with taking wickets. sorry countryhick i just thought i had to say that. Ive looked up to him as a young cricketer as my favorite cricketer for years and no matter what hes done off the field I still see him as a great person and a great cricketer. He just annouced that he will retire in the press confrence, i just watched it. So its the end of an era and i will be able to say to my kids when i get older that i was alive when shane warne was in his prime. and If the sydney test makes it to day 5 i am going to try and get tickets to that match.

Stewie McGill will be the happiest person in the country when warnie retires. McGill will be lucky to be selected the way he is playing for NSW. He is getting carted at the moment. let's see if this decision will make him pull his finger out.

Who thinks Cameron White will be the next long-term spinner?

Always loved warnie. But honesty do not see him as a greater spinner than Every Australians enemy from Sri Lanka. But certainly the best leg spinner.
Love to watch a good spinner bowl, the likes of vetorri, jayasayria (cant spell). But it is something special to see a great spinner bowl. And will miss watching him bowl.

Who thinks Cameron White will be the next long-term spinner? Help me RHONDA!!!!!!!. White could bat at 6 and bowl a bit, but he is behind SCG MacGill, Daniel Cullen, Cullen Bailey & Beau Casson as a spinner. MacGill will be fine, Mick. He is a class act and his Test record is magnificent. Jesus, gimme a break. Daniel Luca Vettori is a fine bowler, but he averages 36. Jayasuriya is a part-time spinner. Murali, Harbajhan, Shaoib Malik and Saqlain Mushtaq ALL chuck the ball; they are NOT bowlers. The best spinner in world cricket after Warne is Anil Kumble, honourable mention SCG MacGill. If you do not believe me, check cricinfo.com and bring up the player records. FYI, the Bangladeshi left arm orthodox spinner Mohammed Rafique has a much better record than DL Vettori. BTW, Monty Panesar is all class and will take 500 Test Wickets. Countryhick, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. I MUST strongly disagree with you; Warne is a true great of the game and this "putting on a pedestal" of sportspersons is quite ridiculous. The last episode in England came down to two buxom, 27 year-old hookers being PAID by News of the World (think the Tele with hooters) to have CONSENSUAL sex with a single 37 year-old man. How can Warne be held to account for this? Yep, he may not be the greatest husband in the world, but that's none of yours or my business. He is an absolute hero and the sooner people ignore the "holier-than-thou" articles in News Ltd papers about Warnie, the better off we'll be. Who cares who he slept with, or how many smokes he's had. He is NOT a criminal, so he should not be treated as such. We will all miss him playing for our country. Yours in cricket, AM
