my thoughts with banners are : 1. An away game banner - specifically designed banner for away travel only. I like Brett's old idea of something like 'Yellow Army' and a map of Australia or something similar? Then underneath TOD or whatever name we end up calling our away travel. 2. Player banners - 1 per player would be great for when they are warming up, coming out the tunnel or scoring a goal

Same reason why some people call terrorists 'freedom fighters' and the other way around as well....... it's all about perspective.

Let's not get off track there.
Great ideas as usual, but lets not let this thread turn into another brainstorm without substance. I guess this is one of the reasons to form the club, so that it is one person's responsibility to make sure the ideas lead somewhere.
Shall we chuck someone the role of unofficial banner person for the moment, say northernspirit since he initiated this, and get the ball rolling on some voted choices for banners and the logistics of getting them made?
(thats not to say that others cant make whatever banner they want when they feel like it. even once there is a club captain it will be up to anyone/everyone to put their hand up and get something made)

I think the idea was more the stencil style of drawing for the banners, i.e. wilko's face in the sort of film negative style. rather the che's face.
I'm in the process of making a flag for away travel yellow background with a blue horizontal stripe with: MARINERS blue font YELLOW ARMY yellow font ON TOUR blue font each line on a different colour. plan is to be about 0.6m high x 1.2m wide and to be able to either be hung from a railing or have it as a standard.

Once the 'Marinators Club' committee is formed they can allocate a % of funds for some professional banners / flags to be made this season.

Indeed, some paint from spotlight, and an old sheet or something similar. I like the idea of the stencil pictures, they woudl look great.

Have some pride and and make them yourself I have plenty of pride thank you very much....... 1. a professional banner or flag would last a hell of a lot longer than some crap made by me from material purchased at Spotlight. 2. a professional banner doesn't look 'tacky' and/or poor quality compared to what I could come up with. 3. The Marinators generate funds to better the game day atmosphere, colour and experience for all Mariners fans. IMO banners and flags come under that heading. Those people who would like to make their own banners and have the artistic flair to do so then great, more the merrier, but my opinion is that as a group we should also get some professionally made items.

i agree re: professionally made ones i can get digital print on canvas which is weatherproof dirt cheap through my mate - ive had a few made before and they last forever, cant get holes or tear and the ink is completely weatherproof the only catch is the artwork has to be high resolution which is fine for text and fonts but images are harder to do, they need to be in high resolution - but perhaps the club could help if we needed images

Professional banners are great but I believe there is also room for home made ones. There should be a mix of both.
The home made look less slick and commercial, are personable, inviting and shows that the fans care more because of the hours gone into making them.
Anyone can buy banners, but nothing says "i love you" like the hard work of slaving over a home made banner.

I agree with Mick, a mix is good. Professional ones that will be used every match, with home-made ones that are match specific. Something in the news about an opposition player or coach that we can latch onto? Something special about a date that deserves attention (such as the Cove with their 'bringing the bridge together' display)? For those we whip something up at home to show we care but also that we're the wittiest supporters in the league

Banner making is a personal message to our mariners from their beloved fan/s. Home made banners are good because you can whip them up and have your say. Professional banners are good because they are smick and you can read them from the top teir of the melbourne telstra dome.
It can be difficult to hang banners at some grounds & remember if you are putting it on a pole get an adjustable pole especially if travelling(Bunnings has a good variety & it's next to Spotlight!!!!!!!) May also need weights at bottom of banner.
I can see a sea of yellow waves around the stadium.
The more the merrier!!! BRING THEM ON.

we have a 'www.marinators.net' banner thats about 10m long.
We'll be relaunching the website this season so it will be good to get other fans going there to see what we do (without facing the prospect of actually coming behind the goals) and perhaps join us.
We have had issues with the advertisements on the fence though.
