Should the Mariners go for a big name striker, let's hope it is someone who is going to be prepared to pass on some of their knowledge about striking to Nik and whoever else is in the forward lineup. Also I think the Mariners have better move quick to sign Jedinak. They've already said that Spencer is released, a possible replacement in Porter is not concrete to stay with the Mariners having been told to play for Lightning before being offered a contract, and I can't think of anyone in the current squad who could fill that central defensive midfield role (maybe Osman if he re-signs). And Jedinak's form with us has probably been noticed....

I've also heard rumours that we are linked to a former West Ham player who has also played in Italy

DJ nearly had me.
Playing in Italy does not necessarily mean playing for an Italian club. It could mean they played champions league or for england.
My guess is Teddy.

oh, no, we're looking far too far away... michael ferranteMichael Ferrante (born April 28, 1981) is an Australian football (soccer) player who currently plays as an attacking midfielder for the Melbourne Victory in the newly formed Hyundai A-League .
He came through the ranks at the Australian Institute of Sport and from there he moved on to the youth team at West Ham starring in a 9-0 aggregate FA Youth Cup Final triumph in which he captained in one of the games, the youth side included World Stars like Joe Cole and Rio Ferdinand.
He also had a spell in Italy with Serie C side Benevento Calcio before returning to be part of the Melbourne's inaugural A-League squad for season 2005/06. In the inaugural season he featured in all of Melbourne Victory' 21 league games, although with the signings of Fred and Grant Brebner he was frozen out of the squad for the second season and struggled to make appearances.
