Central Coast has wasted little time wielding the axe for next season by dumping skipper Noel Spencer less than 12 months after he guided the club to the inaugural A-League grand final.
The Mariners have told midfielder Spencer and defenders Wayne O'Sullivan and Vuko Tomasevic they will not be re-signed after a disappointing end to the season which saw the club lose four of its last five games and miss the finals series.
"We are doing all that we can to ensure that we are a force to be reckoned with next season, and an obvious part of this is reviewing our playing roster and making what we feel to be necessary adjustments," said coach Lawrie McKinna.
"We have identified areas of our squad that need improvement and areas where we are perhaps overstocked. Unfortunately in the world of professional football, releasing existing players is part of that process.
"Sully, Spenny and Vuko have made tremendous contributions to our club during their time here and I'd like to wish them all the best with their future football endeavours."
Spencer, 29, and O'Sullivan, 32, both played key roles in the Mariners stunning surge to the grand final last season, where it lost 1-0 to Sydney FC.
Spencer played 55 games and scored seven goals in his two seasons at the Mariners, while former Irish youth international O'Sullivan played 47.
Tomasevic, 26, joined the club this season and made 11 A-League appearances.

perhaps this thread can discuss the 3 departures.
Spenny - I think we could all see why this happened. The Melbourne game proved Spenny really doesn't have the football brain to direct the team around the park or lead it from midfield, and the previously invincible man was actually dropped. Jedi showed us what else was out there in the defensive midfield position and it was probably curtains then.
Sully - Lawrie won't want to be plugging holes with players out of position next season, and that leaves us with a lot of midfielders. With Spenny, Sully would probably be at the bottom of the pecking order. Other than some unbelievable tackles I didn't feel he actually offered that much in his extended run at fullback. He is small, getting on in age, and his passing and crossing don't really make up for it. More of an odd man out than a liability.
Vuko - Looked out of his depth to me when Travis Dodd carved him in Orange. It never really got better. Heff wasn't the best defender but he covered himself with pace and made up for it with explosive attacking raids. Vuko has neither up his sleeve.

There is more to Sully's "release" than meets the eye, nothing's been confirmed yet but don't be stressing out too much about Sully "leaving"

Having been the target of a lot of his crosses (back of bay 15) I will feel much safer next season :-)
Seemed a good club pro and my abiding memories of him are him whipping us up in the second half of the away semi at the cesspit when he came over to take a throw and his tackle against SFC this year.
Hope all goes well for him

You've been told before, spill or just keep it to yourself.

I think it's obvious what I mean, what he told me was that he will be at the club next season, but in what role, it's undecided, sorry for forcing you to use your brain for a little bit there.

Yet another thread talking about things which are discussed in other areas of the forum!

I think it's a good idea to keep the talk of this here, rather than invading spenny's thread.
It'll be interesting to see what role is invented for Sully, I got the impression it was with CCMFC and not CC Lightning, but there's nothing confirmed about what the role is.

why not have 1 thread - mariners team for next yr, then we can talk about players we are losing and players we are looking at signing!
I think it's a good idea for new users to read a few more things on the forum before starting new threads about things which are already being discussed!
(sorry for my rant)

(sorry for my rant) Exactly why i didnt put a seperate thread for this issue earlier and posted the official release in the "mariner team for next year" thread insted. I believe this forum has set up a new thread policy where you cant post a new thread unless its completly off topic to anything discussed previously or it shall be axed by our 4 admin.

You would think if he was to be kept at the club in some way they would have mentioned that and besides hes still young enough to continue playing

Heres my 2 cents worth Vuko - Average NSL player with Northern Spirit, looks out of his depth in A League, which shows how more concentrated the playing pools are. Strongly agree.
Spenny - Lost his mojo this year, is confidence player and didn't have any all season - if we replace him with the Jedi or better agree.
Sully - I think this seems a harsh move. If my understanding that the squad numbers are going up to 23 next season is correct then I think Laurie should have made room for Sully, he can play in number of positions and always runs his bollox off which is more than we saw from most of the team that took to the field on Sunday! Strongly disagree.
