dont know how sully wont be resigned. doesnt make sense to me, esp with 23 man roster. he can play in two areas of the park, and do it well. what pisses me off even more is that there are players who have played shit this season and are being kept on 'potential'(sorry tiges), while sully played well and gets cut

don't apologise, just like lawrie i have my favourites and i can see guys like ossie and hutch doing super well next term due to their 'potential'. i would put my apostrophes around sully playing 'well'. you could always see lawrie's frustration when he put it out for yet another throw or passed to the opposition or crossed it into brisbane water. his 1 minute worth of stunning last ditch tackles usually made up for 89 minutes of being dominated physically and giving the ball away. and unlike some of the others I've never seen sull play better than that.

The person who told me this would certainly know what they were talking about, DJ. I realise I post shit, but I wouldn't put up just speculation as if it was fact.

Here's my thoughts on the 3. I put this on the wrong thread, originally, and before Omni's inside scoop on Sully. Still disagree with letting him go and still think Vuko got a raw deal, especially considering how many chances Kwasnik has had......anyway....
(1) Spencer - in a way, sorry to see him go. I don't think he played well at all this season, and I said so on more than one occasion. He did captain us to the grand final last season, though, and scored a number of important goals - the late winner against Sydney will always be one of my favourites! Also, he captained Spirit for a while, and along with McKinna and co was one of the reasons I chose Mariners over Bling.
(2) Sully - I agree with the 'why oh why' question. The guy may not be a spring chicken, but I always felt he offered a lot to the team - defending and going forward. Maybe McKinna has a replacement in mind, but that one DOES suprise me.
(3) Vuko - another of the ex-Spirit group gone. I know he had a lot of detractors on this forum, but I don't honestly feel he had a long enough run to prove his worth. People say he was frequently being caught out of position, but this tended to be because he was busting a gut trying to get forward and support the attack. Also, unlike 90% of the team, he can actually cross a ball and was always a threat at set pieces.

I'll start by saying that Sully was one of, if not my favourtie, mariners player.
I ran into Lawrie the other day and asked why we weren't keeping him, he said:
1. age & fitness (only played 11 games this year I think he said)
2. Money - he was earning a fair amount of money I think, one of our top earners. Not sure why we couldn't have offered him a new gig at $35k a year, but I assume he wouldn't want a massive pay cut.
3. Can't pass a ball - Lawrie said he put 8 crosses/passes into the stands against Qld Roar.
Considering the facts, even as a big Sully fan, couldn't not agree with us axing him.
Also, if you look at who we will have next year that can play RB (the only position I believe Sully excelled in this year), we will have Porter, Osman, Clark and potentially Wilko (if we were to play Vidmar & O'Grady in the centre and Brown left).
So plenty of cover.

My thoughts:
Spencer...definately time to go. He was terrible this year and abit of an embarrasment as capt.
Vuko...no where near the standard required. A ball watcher.
Sully.....I would have kept him as cover but he wasn't top class.

It's interesting to read other forums at this time of year and seeing who is linked to who. The Roar forum is claiming to have a very strong link to Noel Spencer, some think he will be a good signing and some don't. They also say that Dario Vidosic is linked with a move to Germany even thou he has 1 year left on his current deal.

Isn't it a little bizarre that you can sign players for finals series from a-league clubs that don't make the finals? A team could just pilfer the best players from the clubs that are out and unfairly win the title. Though it may well be the opposite for Sydney. Can't see Spencer doing the job on Carle like McFlynn did.
