football is all about risks. everyone seems happy that we are possibly signing him, no one cared about petrovskis ego etc. once he was signed.
i dunno. i feel good about it if we sign him. id rather him than dwight.

i guess its part of the negotiations we have to sell our club/future to him but he also needs to prove himself to us sasho obviously did, even though there were concerns prior to his signing on this site owens has got to prove that he wants to play football for the mariners if we are to sign him i still think he will be great signing, so i hope everything gets sorted

Owens is just more interested in the birth of his child which is understandable, once he gets that out of the way I'm sure he will be more focused on he wants out of his career.
IMO I can't see him going to Melbourne, but in football u never know?
Should he sign for us he will be a valuable asset (providing he gets more sleep than Spenny did last season after the birth of his child lol)

We had 3 kids (well, not me personally) with our nearest relative 12,000 klms away. Its a nightmare, you need a support network around you and I suspect GO is going to get the birth out of the way and decide from there.

so what is the meaning behind the title - that he's becoming a 'mariner' or that he's all at sea without a port to call home? Interested, 's all.. massive odds he will be signed here What are those odds, and how much can I have on it ??

Mariners welcome Owens for season threeMariners welcome Owens for season three Monday, 12 March, 2007 - 10:00AM
Greg OwensThe Central Coast Mariners today added highly rated former Adelaide United midfielder and Australian youth international Greg Owens to their playing roster for the 2007/08 Hyundai A-League season.
One of the most gifted and elegant attackers ever to grace the stage of Australia’s premier domestic football competitions, Owens’ arrival at Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium for version three of the Hyundai A-League is another massive coup for Mariners Football Manager Lawrie McKinna.
Last Friday, Owens and partner Bec celebrated the birth of their first child, a baby girl – Layla, with the proud new parents still by their newborn’s side in Newcastle.
Owens’ signing will see him join fellow new recruits Sasho Petrovski and Mile Jedinak in Mariners colours for the 2007/08 campaign.
Owens, 26, made an appearance in all but three of Adelaide United’s 24 Hyundai A-League matches in 2006/07, contributing significantly to a season that saw the Reds secure a berth in the 2008 AFC Champions League by virtue of their qualification for the 2006/07 Hyundai A-League Grand Final.
Owens’ personal highlights included a collection of goals fit for any highlights reel around the world – not least a spectacular long range strike against the Newcastle Jets at Hindmarsh Stadium in Round 17 that was recognised by Hyundai A-League fans as one of the six best goals of 2006/07.
"We’re obviously delighted to have landed a player of Greg Owens’ ability," said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.
"In 2006/07, his performances were as good as any other attacking player in the Hyundai A-League, and I’m excited at the prospect of seeing him replicate his recent form in a yellow and navy shirt in 2007/08.
"As we’ve stated previously, we’re leaving no stone unturned in giving ourselves the best possible chance for success in season three and Owens’ signing is another significant step in this process.
"At this stage, several months out from the season, we’re very contented with how well we are placed in terms of recruitment. While realising that there is still room for improvement, we are delighted to have already attracted the likes of Petrovski, Jedinak and Owens, players of the highest calibre, in addition to finally having a fully fit Nik Mrdja back on deck for next season."
Born in Bathurst, Owens made his first appearance at National Soccer League (NSL) level when playing for the Newcastle Breakers during the 1998/99 season.
In just his seventh appearance for the now defunct club, Owens, 17 at the time, announced his NSL arrival with an unforgettable brace against powerhouse club the Perth Glory – both goals from long distance and both within 17 minutes of coming off the bench to inspire a come from behind 3-2 win for the Novocastrians.
Such form was to become customary for Owens, who by 2001 was a lynchpin member of the Young Socceroos’ (Under 20’s) FIFA World Youth Championship campaign.
Owens represented the Young Socceroos 15 times in 2001, four appearances of which were at the FIFA World Youth Championships in Argentina, where Owens top scored for Australia with two strikes.
Following the Young Socceroos’ showing in Argentina, Owens returned to Australia to assist Sydney Olympic to the 2001/02 NSL Championship, contributing ten appearances, including a start in the Grand Final, and one goal to what was Olympic’s first NSL Championship success in over a decade.
In 2002, Owens’ international resume was expanded to include a handful of friendly appearances for Australia’s Athens Olympic Games hopefuls (Under 23’s), while domestically, Owens was continued to impress with Sydney Olympic and lastly Newcastle United to finish the NSL with 113 appearances and 11 goals to his name.
After a brief stint abroad with second-tier Malaysian outfit Johor FC, Owens returned home to join Adelaide United for the 2005/06 Hyundai A-League finals series, where he made substitute appearances against Sydney FC and the Mariners. that settles that then.

Nice one Lawrie (again!) - looks like we've pulled off another good signing. Assuming Owens is ok mentally & physically, I'm sure he'll be a very good addition to the squad. Pretty happy with how the team is shaping up. Would still like to see them get: (1) A specialist left back, so they don't have to rely on Brown there (not that I'm criticising his performances there, just that it would let him move further forward again) and (2) Another striker, in case Mrdja (again) or Sasho fall prey to the infamous Mariners injury curse!

well done to management. things are looking good for next season. now hopefully a left sided defender and another striker(less important).

Lawrie suggested james holland was a likely signing. Which will cover our striker options
