there is no need for a poll. just whatever catches on at the matches. i dont now about you guys, but is a song about deserting your partner and being able to move to antoher the type of song you want to sing to your team?

Possessing a musical background and a love of football atmosphere has had this topic in the back of my mind ever since the club (or was it Sea FM?) attempted to get this idea rolling last year.
I agree with a lot of what has been said on this thread. For a song to be perfect, it must have a few key features:
1. easy to recognise by the melody (popular or well-known) 2. Relevant to mariners fans, or, lyrics able to be substituted with something simple enough to remember without needing to hold choir rehearsals for 15,000 3. Must have a climax or chorus that is particularly iconic (the kind of thing that will make even first-time fans join in loudly)
Point 3 is essential for it to work. Points 1&2 will make it work more easilly. Without point 3 it will fail.
Better be home soon certainly meets point 3 (you can picture it working), but the lyrics would probably need some customising, and i'm not sure how you'd get everyone in the stadium to learn them and sing along.
Yellow is so close to perfect (the lyrics almost work as-is), but it would be difficult for a crowd to sing due to long pauses for instrumental sections (unless the PA is relied upon), and there isn't a particular passionate climax or loud chorus. The only bit people would likely join in for is the "and they were all yellow", which is hardly "...and i know i'm riiiiiight" or "you'll ne -ever walk a-lone"
Lets hope some ideas get rolling here from the fans; i'm sure it would be a lot more meaningful that way (like a couple having 'their' song)

What about: We are one, but we are many, and from all over the coast we come we share a dream and sing with one voice I am, you are, we are the Mariners" I don't think i need to tell you what that is to the tune of Just thought that up on the spot.

Too token and predictable for me.
If we were to change the lyrics, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John would be both practical to change (it features the words yellow AND blue)
And just imagine...Naaa Naaa Naaaaaaaaaaa, Naaa Nana NaNaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

What about 'yellow football team' to the tune of yellow submarine? I remember not to long ago that someone mentioned that we should sing that more often as our songs, so why not that? Everyone knows the tune, though maybe less so the original words to begin with, let alone new ones. If we establish the new words well though, maybe even via flyers (those were great on that night, may i add)...

My version of one verse is in my sig.

There's also a few versions on the marinators.net under the link 'sea shanties'... i'm not posting them here as that would take a lot of space

I shudder when I here a campaign to have a single song as our main theme.
Watch out or you could end up with a cronically bad song like the Swans ancient shocker!
While history and tradition is good, I'd rather the songs be topical and fresh, like the code itself should be.

Exactly why the right decision needs to be made. No point settling for something that's not going to do the job to full effect. No need to settle for anything until the right suggestion comes up.

My vote is for 'yellow football team'. If it's being sung, not PA'd, then we could modify it a bit. It's a real song, and it's already in use. I think the song should be something that can be used as our victory song too - marinators walking out of the stadium, mingled with the crowd but all singing the one song....
One thing that I wish football had was more tradition. The other codes - particularly league and AFL have loads of tradition. In the case of AFL, the club songs are a huge part of that tradition, and huge part of the game day atmosphere. League doesn't invest in team songs as much, but they're still around, both officially and unofficially. Love the song or hate it, it is the sort of thing that does stir up your passion as a supporter.
Unfortunately football doesn't have that tradition or history here, being a brand new competition. Not that it really harms us, we're still doing alright.
What I'm getting at is, I can't help but wonder if calls for a single main song is partially an attempt to deliberately introduce the same traditions that the other codes have, in an attempt with the ultimate goal of football becoming as mainstream as - or more than - the other codes.
Not that this is a bad reason for a song, I was just thinking out loud really, wondering how much such a call is done from a comparison to other codes, if at all.
Personally I think we should have a song, especially a victory song - but it IS something that can fail miserably (as SeaFM showed us!)

To the chorusy melodic 'make your hairs stand up on end' section bit of the Beach Boys "Sloop John B" (everyone knows the tune, but here's a reminder - www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkuwBeakseM&mode=related&search=) "We're Central Coooooooooooooooast We're Central Cooooooooooooooooooast In Gosford Town We're Central Coooooooooooooooast" Over and over and over again until it sticks, and then surely we can come up with something else for the rest of the song (although I'd be quite happy to go with just this bit for now - this seriously gives me shivers everytime I heard it sung anywhere overseas). If anyone wants to tweak the lyrics slightly then go for it, but I really think this could work, a la Sydney with their constant repetition of Hey Jude. Just imagine it now...... 2-2 in the 88th minute of a home derby against the Jets, and out of nowhere, every single scarf in 15, 16, and 17 rises as one and belts out this melody for 5 minutes straight - if that doesn't lift the players, then I don't know what would.

I thought that with the Scottish connection that something by the Proclaimers would be appropriate. Apparently they sang 500 Miles at the 2002 UEFA Cup final at Hampden Park with the Germans and the Spanish singing along. I'm On My Way (from misery to happiness) was on the Shrek soundtrack so the kids know it, both have been used as commercial jingles recently.

That some good thinking, and 500 miles is ALWAYS a crowd hit. If nothing else we'll get all the drunk men in the other bays singing along ;-)
Although I still like 'yellow submarine' because we've been using it since the start anyway.

I still like the idea of a song that has no mention of football or yellow etc. like many of the English teams. I cringe to the idea of changed words to a classic to become a team song. A few chants of "Yellow Football Team" is ok through the game, but as a team anthem, no way.
"You'll Never Walk Alone" "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" etc.
My suggestion for us would be "Singing in the Rain". Appropriate for Bay 16 and season 1 and a good laugh when it is not raining.
If you want something like "Never Walk Alone", "Better be Home Soon" would be good but may not be easy to sing as a stadium.
What we need to do is 1) work out what effect we want, eg emotion, fun, aggression etc. 2) find a classic that is easy to sing and all know, 3) Do not bugger with the words. 4) Try it for a few weeks and see if it catches on.
If it does not go to 1). If it does we are away.

not a bad idea doubly so because i can't think of anyone else who sings it. everyone knows it (at least the chorus anyhoo), and it's got that feeling of togetherness and solidarity that binds this club and its fans. Sometimes in our lives we all have pain We all have sorrow But if we are wise We know that there's always tomorrow
Lean on me, when you're not strong And I'll be your friend I'll help you carry on For it won't be long 'Til I'm gonna need Somebody to lean on
Please swallow your pride If I have things you need to borrow For no one can fill those of your needs That you don't let show
Lean on me, when you're not strong And I'll be your friend I'll help you carry on For it won't be long 'Til I'm gonna need Somebody to lean on
If there is a load you have to bear That you can't carry I'm right up the road I'll share your load If you just call me
So just call on me brother, when you need a hand We all need somebody to lean on I just might have a problem that you'd understand We all need somebody to lean on
Lean on me when you're not strong And I'll be your friend I'll help you carry on For it won't be long Till I'm gonna need Somebody to lean on
Lean on me...

For away games I like "Better Be Home Soon" or "I Still Call the Coast Home" - just replacing "Australia" with "the Coast".
