This is just what the club needs, weve always been looked at as the worst off financially, besides NZ, and i think this could help for possibly a big marquee next season with his money

I found out about this when I was layed up this arvo, in the bus, at Carrington St, City reading the newspaper. I think the folks in Stand D must have thought I had won Lotto or something the way I was yahooing! Turnbull seems to be the final link the club needs. Someone who appears to have the knowledge at the upper level of how the other clubs do things, an injection of investment, and someone who has previously gone on record with comments that echo the way the Mariners wish to achieve their success, ie. through the community. I don't think his investment is going to reap many dividends this season, but future developments that the Mariners want to bring on (like the Youth Academy), will now more than likely be able to reach their full potential. If that all goes well, and the Turnbull investments help this become a lasting legacy of his time with the Mariners, it may be difficult for the other codes of football to match what the Mariners will end up putting back into the youth in this region (and reap the benefits of upcoming talent). Kudos to Lyall, the Board, and the management team for being able to attract such an investor, and being big enough to allow someone to come in and take a majority share in the Mariners (at least that was what was being reported). As far as Singo's involvement, I tend to view his benevolence as a mutual understanding. He has the rights to the biggest stadium in this region, the Mariners have to do business with him. But he is also wise enough to realise that the venture is something he can fill the stadium with fans during the summer months, and gain some money back after the NRL debacle of the Beagles, and subsequent failures to attract a permanent NRL team here. Would be interesting to know what these two people (Turnbull and Singo) thought of each other ?

what of singo? forgive my cynicism, but his involvement was always more about the stadium than the mariners. that's why he's been at the forefront of pushes for CC-based NRL clubs and the central coast rays ARC entry. this isn't to suggest that singo has been anything but terrific for our club, but will turnbull stepping in and taking a more prime role signal a slight retreat from singo? will the club's and singo's interests diverge at all insofar as what they want with fixturing, ground operations and facilities? ideally, it will give singo a freer hand to invest in the ground in such a way as to boost attendances and gameday revenue - more cover (even a half roof over the northern end would do wonders for comfort and acoustics), better facilities (i'm thinking mobile bars on the northern concourse ;D ) and better homes for merchandise sales etc. Mobile bars sounds good to me

Check the "affiliated organisation" sections. There's a big Mariners logo and link in the top corner, but it still mentions Sydney though.

the reason he left syd was that he didn't see eye to eye with lowy who is an A1 autocrat No chance of him joining the scum then either - an even bigger autocrat up north! Let's hope his business dealings are more stable than Fincorp et al ;D Really great news though! As we've already proven, money does not make a successful good Club, as we are that already. But it sure can help bring in the silverwear. Something to celebrate at this Sunday's big event!

Just had a thought. What are the chances of Turnbull possibly funding a "Guest Player" sometime this season. It is probably too late to consider a new marquee player for the season and Turnbull may look at bringing someone in for 7 games. I know there was a rumour that a similar deal would happen with Sydney regarding Cocu being a guest player, while Aloisi became their Marquee player. Just throwing it out there.

Wouldn't surprise me if Vidmar retires after this season, then we can have a hunt for another marquee. Must be mindful to remember though, that Turnbull's money will only go so far, it ain't a bottomless pit for the Mariners to draw from. Once the money is accounted for in things like recruitments, renewed contracts, youth academy and other developments they may have slated, I doubt there's much left for largesse on some high profile and high paying player. Maybe just enough to give John McKay, Ben and Ivan a payrise perhaps?

Good PR for next weeks game V Phoenix. Free Admission! Might attact a few new spectators who might like what they see and keep coming back.
I'm sure the Mariners couldn't afford this without Turnbull's input.

Anybody who thinks the club will now go out and spend like drunken sailors, I think, will be disappointed. I am sure it will be business as usual but without the fear of not being financially underpinned.
Money does not buy hapiness nor silverware. Who remembers Spirit, the season they had Hickman, Rangers' money and heap of new signings?

Hopefully it now means that we are paid up on all the entry fees to the league and need not worry about not surviving.
I'd rather see the academy given money so we have a viable system of deveolping young talent.
Imagine couple of years down the track, we have won the league with games to spare and send out a team entirely made up of academy graduates or a team entirely of local boys.

Yeah, it isn't going to be a massive spending spree, like Abramovich at Chelsea, but we would surely be in a better position to purchase a marquee that is better and more expensive than Vidmar.

When I got wind of this, it made my day.
As marinermick said, "Onward and upward to becoming the best club side in Asia!"
