SYDNEY FC's former founder Peter Turnbull has stunned the A-League with a multi-million-dollar investment in arch-rivals the Central Coast Mariners.
The massive cash injection, to be formally announced today, catapults the Mariners out of the sick ward of the A-League and comes just days after Turnbull sold his stake in Sydney.
The Daily Telegraph understands the Mariners' future has been assured by the deal with Turnbull and the Football Federation has given the switch its blessing after several days of negotiations.
Turnbull was approached by Mariners' chairman Lyall Gorman after making public his decision to stand down from any active involvement in FC at the end of March and the pair have spent recent weeks tying up the deal.
Now the club are aiming to expand their talent identification programme with ambitious aims to be the country's centre of excellence.
The Mariners have already signed deals with two of NSW's largest football associations involving merchandise and access to the region's brightest talent.
To underpin it, Turnbull has become the largest shareholder in the Mariners.
The Gosford outfit, whose stunning first season in the A-League culminated in a grand final, have struggled to attract investment until now, but have long been regarded as having one of the strongest grassroots operations in the league.
The club has founded a highly- regarded academy, putting in place a direct pathway for young talent to follow right up to the club itself, and have mounted an ongoing campaign to nurture the game across the region.
After selling out of Sydney Turnbull was expected to support a new franchise in the western suburbs once FC's exclusivity deal for the Sydney market had lapsed in 2010.
Mariners' chairman Lyall Gorman described the investment as a "red-letter day" for the club.

Absolutely sensational news for the Mariners. Turnbull is no dummy when it comes to football and investments and there are obviously very good reasons for him to spend his money here.
Congrats to Lyall and the team for all their hard work, it's quite obviously paid off! ;D

Zing! This is absolutely great, very significant for the Mariners and I imagine will be an enormous benefit to our club. This guy is no dummy whatsoever, and he is a long-time passionate fan of Australian football with an emotional attachment to it's growth and success. He's done very well for himself, too.

Just watch out for Julian, or perhaps not! I've said too much already! in regard to Turnbull, I had my suspicions that this may be our opportunity when I read some time ago he was looking to become blingless! Well done management!
