Probably just needed the occasional foot on the ball to slow it down and let them do the running to track us.
Better to win ugly then to lose pretty.
Thought Porter was a good addition from wide whipping them in. Simon is learning more and more what his specific role is when he comes on and is proving a great addition the structure of our play. Defensively with the long ball I thought we struggled with it.Thompson for any defence is a handful and we were opened a few times for pace.

Hey Cockerill, Harper............ get Sydney's cock out of your mouth and get over yourselves. We won, plain and simple. Why is it that every single negative they can hammer on about us, they do, and in a never ending fashion?? Seriously, you'd think Sydney were the only team who had decent supporters - why didn't he say that was the smallest travelling contingent of Sydney fans thus far last night, or that it was disenchanted noise because the SCC and the Cove were competing against each other, or that Juninho is shit?? Or how about their light hearted dismissal of the Squadron - "oh, it's the blitz from the Squadron - now now, we don't need that". Seriously, the only person who gives us the respect we deserve are Hill and Postecoglou. What part of "WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE AND HAVE BEEN ALL SEASON" don't those morons understand?? "Oh boo hoo only 11 000"....... 2 years ago we had an exactly the same day situation against Adelaide - gorgeous Sunday afternoon, we were near the top of the table, and guess what, we got 6000 or so. Today we had a crowd from all walks of like, full of color and some serious noise for the last 10 minutes. Any weekend in which the A-League has home games with Adelaide, Perth, and us, and STILL averages 11 500 is fine by me. We can only get better from here. And if they're looking to expand the league in the future, we're the model that they're going to have to adopt in other regional towns, because we sure as hell don't need another Hakoah FC running around. I'm so sick of the lack of respect we get - let's see any fan group go hard nuts for 90 minutes in that kind of heat today _when your team plays that shit for 75 minutes_....... I can promise you that no other fan group goes nuts when their plays that average. Kudos to the travelling Melbourne supporters though, could hear them loud and clear, and as far as I can tell, no shit was stirred. Good to see.

Just saw Tommy's strike from the camera behind on Fox Sports News.
What. Pure. And. Utter. F*cking. Class. And. Technique. If anyone gets to see that particular angle, just look at the way he aligns himself to that ball as he hits it. Just.............. wow.
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
P.S. That Sydney/Melbourne game next Saturday night is going to be huuuuuuuuuuuuuge.

Now thats leaving it late. But its the kind of ugly, gritty performance that teams need to put in to win. Fancy flicks and tricks are alright when you're clearly better than the opposition, but you need this kind of determination when you're playing a real challenger. And it was a pretty goal

Gee we were always going to be vulnerable when we went to three at the back with Wilko, who hasn't played for three months, and Viddie and Boogs not noted speedsters V Allsop and Archie. Blessing in disguise when Boogs got hurt and Porter came on.
What happened to the surface yesterday? The worst it has been in three seasons.

WOW ! Very close game. I think our best was hutcho he was unbelievable again, Vidmar Marquee ? I dont think so next year. Aloisi played an average game can do better, much better. I think our revival was sparked by Matty Simon. He came on and the whole team lifted, he's quick, strong, young, NOT AFRAID TO SHOOT, and personally i think one day a socceroo. Andre was inspirational too.
Why was Sasho sent off ? There goes another one for next week. And is Boogs ok ?

Ok for 60 mins we were not great, but I didn't think they were any better than us. I think that maybe your yellow glasses your are wearing. Melbourne were all over you guys (except the first part of the game). Jedinak i think was your major loss, he seems to give you guys the edge on other teams, and you dont seem to have a like for like replacement for him. To think you guys are winning with out Aloisi and Sasho combining well is a warning to the rest of the league

There were a lot of things I liked about the win yesterday, but number 1 had to be the attitude of the players after they went 1-0 down. A lot of teams, including Mariners teams of the past, might have lain down and accepted defeat, but not these guys. Substitutions were inspired - Simon ran the Melbourne defence around and set up the first, while Porter's crossing was fantastic - if he can put more of those in we'll get quite a few goals this season. As for Sasho & Tommy....those guys infuriate me....then they pop up with crucial goals and prove me wrong time and time again. Spent most of the 2nd screaming for Mckinna to take Tommy P off.....guess that's why I'm not a professional coach! Haven't seen the replay of Sasho's sending off....looked like he got elbowed by the Victory player....then maybe retaliated, or swore at the linesman? ?

Sasho was tugging at Vargas shirt. Vargas tried to swipe/elbow Sasho off him. Vargas collected Sasho with his elbow. Vargas - straight red for elbow Sasho - Yellow for tugging shirt

Agreed. First 10, we looked great. Next 70 we were almost Perthlike in our shiteness. Last 10 - proper Mariners performance.
Vidmar showed (sadly) that he has extended his career by a season too long and it is embarrassing to see such a great player looking so poor.
Porter made an impact and is surely worth a run in the side. He has pace and can cross the ball.
IMHO we missed Jedi a lot because it forced Hutch to drop very deep.
Still, another 3 points. :-)

ps - Top marks to Kwas for being out there. He is still looking unfit and was trying right up to the end. He got no service at all either.
Well done for effort!

Harper’s comments on fox are hilarious – Melbourne’s deficits in the possession stats, the time in opposition half, shots on goal and balls into the penalty area look like John Howard’s polling numbers, but he still effectively calls it a points victory for Melbourne. I’ll have some of what you're smoking sonny!
The only stat that was equal was shots on target, and that shows our boys need to pull the trigger at better times - a few times they were shooting a second late or panicking rather than playing to a plan.
The first goal was Sasho doing what Sasho does - being the man there to poke it away. Ugly, but it counts on the scoreboard.
The second was great - Hutch draws men in (probably fearing another 18yd screamer) and then lays off for Tommy for another effortless poke home.
3 points, thanks for coming!
I’m not at all worried about the crowd. It takes our average over 10k, it bodes well for the game next week. Given we’ve seen off the last Sunday as well and we’re heading into party season, I reckon we can pull over 10k for the rest of the year, and much bigger for December 1 against Sydney (and the Festival of Dibo), NYE against Melbourne and the R.20 derby with the scum.

Simon is learning more and more what his specific role is when he comes on and is proving a great addition the structure of our play. Midfielder and I discussed Simon after the game, and we think he could be trained up to become a great wide midfielder rather than a striker. he has enough pace to run from box to box and can be placed on the opposite wing to Kwas

What a ride! We could have been a couple of goals up early and then lost it completely. No vision, no width, no movement and no passion. Melbourne didn't outplay us, we let them into the game. Glad that Thompson decided to show his entertaining clown skills, his finishing is woeful. Boogard lack of pace shown up and noticeable that Vidmar never even contemplated trying to match Thompson's pace. Owens the opportunity to cement a firdt team spot. Gumprecht was the catalyst. I cursed him when he blazed over after doing the hard work when Aloisi was completely unmarked (no vision), but it was his running which turned the game and then Porter showed what crossing the ball was all about - lets have Porter and Gumprecht starting next week not Clark and Owens. Pondeljak did it agin, pretty hopeless then scores a real gem. Felt sorry for Kwasnik, he might as well have been on Terrigal Beach for all the passes that came his way, and he was clearly up for it. Passing was very pedestrian. But the last ten minutes changed everything. Wow!!
