*Andy Harper voice* Wow there is no enthusiasm from those 11,000 coasties. Should be at least 25,000 people to welcome John Aloisi.

It looks great at the back but it almost looks like there was a cut off line half way down where NOONE has there arms up if anyone was down there was the noise not travelling?? I noticed tiger and dibs were further back this week and no megaphones did that really make that much of a difference to how well the guys down the front heard us

I agree Shoots,, the two games he has played for us he has been heavily marked the whole game, Im sure he is going to do well for us. And when we do play a whole 90 with a fully fit squad again, it will be good to see. Vargas cried!!! ...or did he have something in his eye? (personal highlight of the match for me, besides the Tommy Magic....) Varge-Arse cried the other time he got sent off against us too. He's just a SNAG.

I am not too worried after this game. We got the result in difficult circumstances. It was a shame we were not already 2 up when the send off occurred. Merrick switched to a 7 0 2 formation and played for the draw with the option of a goal on the counter from the long ball and Archie's pace. Which they acheived. It is very difficult to break down a defense like this and they had practised it against us last year. The problems I saw: Our left and right backs have had limited experience playing with our left and right wingers. Little understanding of each other. Not enough wide balls and switches to spread their packed defense and run them round. A lack of urgency until we went a goal down. Lack of pace, and at times, understanding in defense. The biggest worries is handing over possession too easily. I do not mean the attacking passes that do not come off (if you do not try you do not achieve). I mean the unforced simple passes that are sliced. I also mean the panic clearances from the back, hoofed down the field. Please can we take the ball from our own box by passing along the ground. Other teams seem to be able to do it, even Perth. The positives: The heavy marking of Aloisi will continue but bring it on that should make openings for others. The substitutions were well timed and added the spark needed when their defense was tiring. Gumps is a great sub. Owen is finding his feet and getting better. Tommy is finding his form and should be a starter. Smitta showed his position is in the midfield attacking not in the back 4. Please let us not be forced toplay he nor Owen in the backs again. The heart shown by all the players. FEARLESS PREDICTION: Tommy and Aloisi to discover they understand each other and rip defences apart. I would like to see Tommy play in Hutchi's position and Hutch drop back one, then play Jedi in the back 4. Big call when Hutch is playing well but I think we need a bit more spark from that position. Would we miss Jedi as DM too much? Discuss.

Gumpey and Porter were the catalyst for that win. Like someone said we were all over them for the first 10 then borderline pathetic for the next 50. Viddy and Boogs looked like they were running in treackle. I just can't understand how defenders can be constantly caught out on the wrong side of a player so often in a game....picking up players is called Marking and we really should try it some time!
Hutcho had a super game. Aloisi was average but I can see him scoring plenty over the next few weeks. I think Kwasnik did nothing to warrant a starting berth. Simon still doesn't look anything like an A-League striker but I agree he could be useful as a winger. We need to fire up as a team and show some urgency, close down and fight for the ball. Look at Muscat...when the ball is near him he expects to win the ball and does everything to ensure he does. Our back four (FOR THE LAST 2 OR 3 GAMES) stand back and dont close down. Danny was excellent as usual.

Can someone post a brief transcript of the main parts of what Harper and Cockerill said? Having trouble accessing the foxsports videos. AH: Just 11,000 unfortunately, that ‘s probably the only detraction from what happened here this afternoon, would have liked a few more people here to have seen this, to have seen John Aloisi and to have seen the match of football that ensued
MC: The best team lost this game you have to say that, the Mariners very lucky to get out of it…
…somehow the Mariners roused themselves in the last 10 minutes with a couple of goals that maybe they didn’t deserve to be honest, ah, Lawrie McKinna will obviously take the points but he will have to ask some questions about this performance
Well those scenes tell the story really that’s just pure relief from those Mariners players, pure relief for a lot of the fans here. For most of this game the Mariners’ fans were very quiet, it was the small group of Victory fans who came up from Melbourne who were making all the noise with good reason but somehow, and it’s a strange game this game of ours, football, somehow the Mariners have got away with the points.
AH: Melbourne, only 48% of the possession, but there was what they did with that possession that was really telling, could easily have scored more than one. 54% of the time in the opposition half for the Mariners again is a again misleading I guess when you look at the flow of the game, 11 corners – 6 of those to Melbourne, there’s one of those stats that sticks out, and 3 offsides, just shows how Melbourne were pressing the Mariners’ defence. Total shots the Mariners 23 to 15 from Melbourne, balls into the penalty area, well for a team that had a man less for a good hour that’s a pretty even stat 20 to 13 and then 6 shots on target each – the goalkeepers had to earn their money.
..and it’s the Central Coast, back where they spent the first six weeks of the competition, alone on top. [We were there alone for 9 weeks, bucko… this has been the only week of the year when we weren’t, and we were only behind on goal difference.] I’ve already commented on the crowd, they are probably right that we were a bit quiet (there were patches of severe frustration in the patch after half-time) and I think generally we need to do a fair bit better, but all the noise from the Melbourne supporters? Hmmm… In particular (and making a nice change) after we went down the noise lifted and we brought them home. After it was 1-1 we went again and after the 2-1 it was as deafening as I’ve heard it in a long while. Harper on the stats is plain hilarious and I don’t think we were lucky. We gritted it out, and we had to come back to win it. To say Melbourne dominated is rubbish – we created more chances as you can see by balls into the box and shots away, we just muffed more too. And we did put one more away than they did so we get the points. Tough shit to them, you gotta make your own luck. Nihil aliud scit necessitas quam vincere - Necessity knows nothing else but victory. (Syrus) - suck on them lemons Cockerill.

Harper and Cockerill were right.
We were lucky. Stats may back us up but they played it smarter for most of the match.
Thompson was immense. Vidmar is just woeful.
Isnt that about the third time we have gone a man up over Melbourne and not got a result or only got a point? At least the subs saved our bacon.

we were hardly lucky
1. we hit the post twice in the first fifteen minutes 2. their finishing was poor 3. keenan's tackle was a joke and deserved a red 4. we came back strong in the last ten through clever subs and determination
none of these factors had luck

Isnt that about the third time we have gone a man up over Melbourne and not got a result or only got a point? At least the subs saved our bacon. For a start, we won, so it's at least the second time we've conceded first and come back to get a result against Melbourne (3-1 in R.21 of season 1 being the other). For seconds - look at the quotes from Harper: Melbourne, only 48% of the possession, but there was what they did with that possession that was really telling, could easily have scored more than one. He’s just spinning spinning spinning to make melbourne look better when the numbers tell a different story. To me it seemed fairly clear that we were basically being cut up for pace at the back, but it’s not like we didn’t completely smash them in the first half hour or the last 15 minutes. So basically for about half the game while we were asleep they had most of the running, but in that time weren’t really all that effective (lots of running, no teeth), while we were awake and looking lethal early and late.
