have to disagree dibo
if he pulled one or two defenders out of position because he is offside then he is influencing play
i thought the decision correct

Aloisi chased the ball to the side after Hutcho had two shots blocked. All the defenders were trying to get in front of those...Matty was quite unmarked when you look at it. Certainly not interfering.
In any case Mick did you see the replay from side on? When Hutcho's second shot is taken, both Aloisi and Matt are onside. I do agree that this is the point the offside was called for, but probably on Aloisi rather than Matt, because the way the defenders move forward and Aloisi goes the other way to chase the ball it is deceiving in that typical way offsides often are.

Mick - dibo's correct on this one. If the defender chooses to go and mark an offside player, that's his own tough luck. As the basis for the offside changes a few years ago was to make it more favourable for the attackers, the referees aren't supposed to pull up play just because the defender makes a bad decision. So 'interfering with an opponent' has to be doing something like physically challenge, cross his path, or block his view. Drawing a defender away is permitted, because that's considered an action by the defence, not the attacker.
It's hard to tell from the replay who got pinged, and if it was correct - but it was close anyway, so I'm not going to bother getting too worked up about it. Although I'm not sure if Simon or Aloisi got pinged....
Anyhoo, superb play by the boys. I agree that Kwassie slipped off his standard a bit, but everybody else was great. Danny was brilliant, Vidmar proved his critics (including myself) wrong - which I'm glad to see. Simon did the same. Aloisi looked bloody hungry for a 3rd goal, he did a lot of work. We had great teamwork all over the park - and there were a lot of nice little touches. Many of them went straight to Adelaide, but it was great to see them trying anyway.
Our toughest area was in their box - we were dangerous until we got there. Once we got in the box we seemed a little uninspired - although maybe that's a credit to their defence, we really didn't have a lot of space in their box.
After that disallowed goal I was worried they'd score ,because we looked a bit discouraged and they started to fight back.
Overall, it was a fantastic match, miles better than last week, and we were basically in control all over the park.

Was also great to see we kept a clean sheet against the leading goal scoring team in the comp.Even after we were sitting on a 2 goal lead the mariners stayed hungry and alert some other teams may have gone home early.

I'll agree that while no-one had a bad game, Kwas didn't put in a potential MOM effort, and the only other player you could probably add to that category is Heff. Sucks that it's easier to pick 2 who didn't stand out quite so much, because it really was a great performance on the whole and by no means sub-standard from anyone.

Thought Vidmar played one of his best games for us....one game doesn't make a season, but maybe, just maybe some of us (including me) have written him off too early. Hmmm...I would say he's had two bad games and the rest good, yet people write him off based on the two. Have people forgotten all those cleans sheets we kept, even with no Wilko? But how many bad games does Gumps have to have to not be the saviour? Gumps is great but he is injured and the team is cruising without him - what's with the 'what happened to Gumps' at this point in time Not sure I completely understood the last part of your posting, Brett, so feel free to correct me if needs be....I hadn't realised Gumps was injured, and so was wondering why he'd been left out of the squad altogether. As for Vidmar, I felt he'd had more than 2 bad games. He'd been caught out of position or outpaced on too many occasions, not to mention his 2 reds. However, he was outstanding on Sunday....would have been a candidate for MOM if Aloisi & Simon hadn't played so well themselves. If he can keep up that level, then I think he's still got a future with the Mariners.

I've possibly missed the mark on your posting about Gumps, but my comment was probably aimed at a wider forum perception that often comes up about Gumps. He is often people's (not necessarily you) man of the match, or there are claims he runs more than any other player, or he always apparently changes the whole game when he comes off the bench, or Lawrie is criticised for subbing him off even when he has a shocker. Other players like Kwassie or this season Vidmar play really well then have one bad one and get hammered. Apologies if I have come down on your post as one too many 'Gumps is untouchable' comments when it was not really one of the offenders that has bothered me...if that makes sense. I do totally disagree about Vidmar thoguh, I thought his first red was a game-saver and his second was unlucky, and he had been great until the Sydney 3-2 game. PS. I love Gumps, just not pre-conceptions about players that see criticism or praise unjustly spread around

Tommy - everyone knows what I think of him, but another ripper of a game. His combinations with Hutcho, Owens, and Aloisi are getting more deadly as every game passes. A joy to watch. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Vidmar - World. Class. I don't give a flying rats arse that he's a bit slower that he used to be, his technique and positioning make up for it, and watching him is a privilege that I think every single person at the game should lap up, because he won't be around forever. The mere mention of his name makes an attacker think twice about having a go at him. Sheer delight.
Hutcho - way to prove me wrong boyo, way to prove me wrong. What a season thus far.
Wilko - ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Danny - NINJA KICK!!!!

We're probably all a little guilty of double standards when it comes to our favourite players & teams. As for Gumps, I think we all love the guy, and we all hope he can get back to the level of HAL season 1.

I do not think Vidmar will continue next year. I dont think his body can take it, and he will take the rest, and a likely coaching role.

We were very very good. Vidmar was superb. MOM for me was Jedi. hutcho was brilliant as usual this season. Simon surprised me with such an excellent game. Aloisi was excellent and is going to score a hatful in the coming weeks. danny is a brilliant keeper. It was nice to see us play well without Gumps (we are usually toothless withou him) who I agree has been below his best so far this season...if you are talking to me Brett....i'll always call it as i see it....and the way I see it some of the criticism of gumps has been bordering on stupid. I don't know the players personally so don't have to suck up to them...is they were shit in a game...i'll call it. For example I think Kwas has been hopeless the last game an a half.

'Usually toothless without Gumps'...he has contributed relatively little this season and we are four points clear.

Short sighted and probably very limited in your knowledge of the game i'd suggest Perm.

I think a lot of people here watch the game from bay 16 and only see part of it. I cannot understand those criticising Heff. who used his pace time and time again to close down Adelaide's breaks. I also know Tiger (aka Brett) always watches the replay before commenting and is one of the best judges of the game on this forum. I fully agree with his comments on Gumps who has not been playing well enough for a starting position at the moment. I suspect it has been a while since he has been injury free. I think some here call it as they see it, but do not see much.

LOL.
Be boring if we agreed on everything. Gumps has been below par this season but the bloke deserves massive respect (something the crowd gives him whenever he comes on). When I hear blokes with a half his talent being put foward as replacements for him...it does make me a little bit defensive of his spot. I think it started last season when muppets like Spencer and McMaster stayed on the park and Lawrie would sub Gumpey.

However, I've been very impressed with Gumps when coming on as a sub in the last few games, he's really made a difference and I hope he continues to do so. Macca and Spencer were garbage!

macca had his moments and i suppose if it wasn't for off-field distractions he would have been a gun
still loved his performance at telstra dome last season
