Analysis
The Central Coast Mariners have recovered from a mini-wobble mid-season to win 12 points from a possible 15 and reinforce their position atop the Hyundai A-League ladder.
The fact coach Lawrie McKinna has kept clear distance between his side and the chasing pack virtually the entire season is an even more impressive feat considering the constant changes enforced on him by injury.
Tom Pondeljak injured his groin in the first-half against Perth Glory last week and he is the latest Mariner to be sidelined alongside long-term absentees Nik Mrdja, who will miss the rest of the season, and Matt Osman.
Fellow midfielder Mile Jedinak is also missing after receiving two bookings in five frantic second-half minutes as the Central Coast defended a slim lead against the Glory. The one-match sentence is Jedinak's second ban in a month.
McKinna has named an extended squad for Sunday's short trip to EnergyAustralia Stadium to give returning Qantas Australia under-23s goalkeeper Danny Vukovic time to recover from playing two internationals in five days.
Defender Nigel Boogaard wasn't needed for the national team's trip to North Korea, while Damien Brown and Andre Gumprecht are available after hamstring layoffs and Paul O'Grady could make his first start of the season following shoulder surgery.
Gary van Egmond will have mixed feelings after Mark Bridge was ruled out for a fortnight because of an ankle concern. However, Qantas Australia under-23s team-mate Stuart Musialik didn't play either qualifier on his recuperation from having his appendix removed and could make his domestic return.
The third member of Newcastle's Qantas Australia under-23s trio, Adam D'Apuzzo, will serve a one-match suspension carried over from before the international break.
Defender Steve Eagleton has flu while Argentine Jorge Drovandi (ankle) and Scott Tunbridge (omitted) miss out.
Joel Griffiths, now level with Sydney FC's Alex Brosque in the scoring charts, has scored six of Newcastle's 13 goals this season.
Meanwhile, Noel Spencer is due to make his 50th Hyundai A-League appearance. The former Central Coast Mariners captain, who joined the Jets this year, has become a regular player in recent weeks after sitting out most of the first seven rounds on the bench.
