Since Sonic and Meggsy are now joining our team, I thought some of you might be interested in this club. So I will tell you some facts and maybe this thread could be kept alive in the future with information about the team and the former Marriners players.
History and achievements
FCN which is simply called "der Club" which means "the club" has won the german championship nine times, but that is rather long ago: 1920, 1921, 1924, 1925, 1927, 1936, 1948, 1961, 1968. However there is only one team, which no real Nuremberg fan likes, that has won the german championship more times: Bayer Munich
The german cup went three times to Nuremberg: 1935, 1939, 1962
The history after 1968 is mainly a tragedy. The team became german champion that year but went down to the second league one year later. That's a sad and unique record in german football! Or even in the world?
The seventies and eighties
Until 1978 the team stayed in the second league with many attempts to get back to the top flight by wasting a lot of money. Until 1985 the team went down again two times. Although the team made it to the cup final in 1982 which was lost after leading 2:0 in the first half against... Bayern Munich. It was a legendary game also because one goal by Nuremberg was shot from 40 meters away from the goal. And there was also the chance for the 3:0 but it was stopped by a rather obvious foul, but the referee didn't react.
In winter 1984 FCN was last in the second league and therefore a lot of older players were thrown out. A unique event in german football history. Usually the coach gets fired. Then the team was filled up with some talents from the U19. At the end of the season this very young team went to the first position and made it back to the Bundesliga. This winter 1984 was the start of a rather good period in the first league. The highlight in this area was definitely the UEFA cup in 1988. The team didn't make it to the second round although the made two very good matches against the italian top team AS Rome.
The nineties
In 1994 a very tragedic periodic with a lot of ups and downs. The 94 team was very good but couldn't stay in the first league only because it scored some goals too few.
In 1996 rock-bottom was hit with going down to the third league. But after that they went back to the top flight directly within two years. Things seemed to have gotten much better and the team appeared to be saved before the last match. Three points and five goals in front of Frankfurt and everyone assumed that this would mean another year in the Bundesliga. But the unbelievable thing happened. Nuremberg lost 1:2 after not scoring the 2:2 a few minutes before the end and Frankfurt won 5:1 while they only lead 2:1 twenty minutes before the end of the match. No one in the Nuremberg stadium believed when the other result was reported...
2000 to present
2001 the team went up again, but went down again in 2003. In 2004 the last promotion to the first league happened. In 2005 Marek Mintal, a slovakian international who came for about 150.000 Euros, was the first Bundesliga top scorer of the league from the FCN with 24 goals. With that he also defeated 19 Million Euro player Roy Makaay from Bayern Munich.
However this season Mintal had a lot of bad luck with breaking his foot two times. So he made only four matches. In January, after the winter break, he made his first match after four months but broke his foot again after two minutes. In this same winter break another slovakian international, Robert Vittek, was nearly sold to Olympique Marseile. While being a big talent which was also chased by Real Madrid when he was 19, he became the scapegoat for many bad matches of the whole team in 2005. But the coach intervened and he stayed.
You may have already noticed that FCN is well-known for exceptional stories. Another one happened with Vittek this year. After having scored no goal in the first half of the season he then scored 15 goals in 16 matches now.
However I nearly forgot the story of this whole season. The team was 18th in October 2005 with only 6 points from 11 matches. But then Hans Meyer, who already had retired twice, took over the team and lead it to an exceptional series of matches with 35 points in 22 matches. Before the last match on Sunday the team is now 9th. The best position since 13 years
This is only a very short version of the history of the "club". A lot has been left out for space reasons. You may find more information here:
