Why aren’t we singing some of these chants? some of them are really good but we seem to give these up along with other really good chants on marinators.net like “The Mariners go marching" and the longer version of Yellow Submarine for simple one-liners like "Mariners *clap clap clap*" way to often and we end up sounding boring and repetitive because of it.
I get that we want everyone to join in, but it seems like all the chants we sing are simple chants (and even those we still sing too fast for other people to understand). The only time we do get into some great chants is either when we’re in the Kendall or on a bus.
Maybe we could aim for two more involved chants per match? – That “I used to work in Newey” chant would have gone down a treat but I didn’t hear it in the stands. (can someone post the words to that one?). That way we can get people involved with the simple ones and keep it fun for seasoned people of bay 16.

I think you make good points. I'd love to see more songs of a longer and more complicated variety as well. At the moment it's very hard to bring new things in and we probably have enough songs to get us to the end of the season.
Next year we'll re-launch a new look marinators.net and start a new 'song of the week' section which will run each week before a home match. It can contain lyrics and a youtube or other music demo to explain the rhythm. That way everyone will know where to look for the definitive new chants. Only a handful of people are willing to look through 10-page threads like this one.
I also hope that next season brings a return of the Kendall Bar pre-sing! It has died away with people leaving at various times for the game. If we get Bay 16 reserved seating next season we can stay longer and get things warmed up by practising new songs beforehand.

It was very noticeable listening to the Cove and The Shed on TV over the weekend that their songs are very clear and understandable. The keys are a) they use a small repetoire (at least at each game), and b) they sing them relatively SLOWLY.
I am not advocating restricting what songs we sing and some of the recent new ones have been superb, particularly the topical ones. We need however to slow down if we want others to join in.
We also at home need to wait for a song to fully finish before starting another, as often it is a mass of noise and 2 or 3 songs are going off at diffrent points of the Bays.
BTW - pending next years revamp, can those who are conductors put together a listing with words to the new hit songs, the ones we actually sing, and send them to me - I volunteer to add them to the Sea Shanties pages.

I was watching the replay on Saturday, and a couple of minutes after I turned it on you could hear us clear as day singing "Oh Newcastle, is full of shit".
It was hillarious. I couldn't stop laughing. You could hear us several times quite clearly through the match. We quietened down towards the end. The only times I could hear newcastle was when they scored and towards the end. "New-cast-le, New-cast-le "
Typical newcastle, they only sing when they're winning.

How many here (hopefully the answer is 'everyone') has heard "The Beatles - All Together Now"??. An insanely infectious tune that _surely_ we could attach some words to and just let rip with a chant that goes on for 5 minutes at a time?? Ideas?? mudderfarker!we could totally make that work.

Holy shitballs Dibo, I've tried forever to get this one going - it's funny and catchy.
Hows about I give it another whirl on Sunday but let everyone know before I do?? Any alternate lyrics, or just go with the catchy chorus bit??

yeah? some sort of lead - in would be good too - maybe we should ask happy what they do? we had this 'working' a few times last year, by which i mean to say it looked ok but had plenty of room for improvement. just had a thought - the key is to have everyone know what you're doing, so there might have to be a coupla practice-ey runs, and just get to have everyone get the hang of it, but... bring it all on from the drummers. this one's all about jumping and rhythm - the rhythm has to be steady. get the drummers doing a steady 1-2 1-2 1-2.... 4 bars. count everyone in on the last bar to start: 4 runs jumping: shala lalalalala hey central coast shala lalalalala hey central coast shala lalalalala hey central coast shala lalalalala hey central coast then 4 runs clapping overhead on every second beat! drums cut from a 1-2 to a single beat. shala lalalalala hey central coast shala lalalalala hey central coast shala lalalalala hey central coast shala lalalalala hey central coast

the 'all together now' should be call and response Done. Brilliant. Print that gear out and bring it along, give 10 or so people copies so we can't belt it out and keep it going for as long as possible. ;D

The Shalalalalalala one could start slowly and speed up. Here's the video of our "sister-club" doing it (the link in dibo's quote above has expired) www.youtube.com/watch?v=GB98wjHd-ew

The Shalalalalalala one could start slowly and speed up. i think keeping a steady pace driven by the drum is the best thing. when the pace changes, it seems to inevitably change at different rates across the bay. for this, the drums should not be a rolling beat but instead a 'bash bash bash' style thing instead, so as to drive on rather than drown out the chant.

the 'all together now' should be call and response could we replace 'all together now' with another line that relates somehow to the mariners 'up the mariners'?

little bit of next day rewriting, rethinking. also reformatted the choruses so as to make them easier to understand (i.e. they're in blocks of 4 lines with a call and response). only goes through once the first time, twice the others. there's a tune to it as well, once people get the tune it will be a piece of piss.
