And for another pun... And that's the short and tall of it. You know what they say about Mariners with big feet (hmmm there's a seamen call there )

The Mariners definitely the tallest. From today's A-League media release, apologies if spammed elsewhere. --- THE TALLEST, THE SHORTEST The average height of Central Coast Mariners' squad (183.0cm) is the tallest of the eight Hyundai A-League clubs; Melbourne Victory is the shortest (179.8cm). Average heights of Hyundai A-League squad players: 183.0cm Central Coast Mariners 182.8 Queensland Roar 182.5 Perth Glory 182.0 Sydney FC 181.4 New Zealand Knights 180.8 Adelaide United 180.6 Newcastle Jets 179.8 Melbourne Victory The tallest player of the Hyundai A-League is Queensland Roar goalkeeper Scott Higgins (200cm); the shortest player is Queensland's Massimo Murdocca (165cm). The Roar also has the league's tallest outfield player Tyler Simpson (198cm). The average height of all Hyundai A-League players is 181.6cm. Getting that type of information borders on 'A-League geek'!

Congratulations all on reaching 500 forum members after 11 months of existence - now for 600 before our first year is up!
A very warm welcome to our 500th Forum member, who slipped through sometime in the past hour, when I had my back turned!
Note: We started on 24 October 2004, reached 130 by 1 March 2005, passed 300 in May, 400 in August, and now 500 in the next month of September 2005!!
Of course with double usernames and trolls they are not all real Mariners fans but this is still an achievement none the less (at its peak the Northern Spirit forum hardly reached 200)!
Keep getting the word out guys and gals!

Just put the Spirit numbers into perspective, net access / use was very different back in 99... True, but I was talking about Brossy's later period forum c. 2002, not the older Spirit email List. Yes, I know there were separate McCartney & Bob Stand lists! Still 509 is very encouraging, even if most are lurkers.

To clarify I think 500+ on the forum is great, now lets get all of them along to Bay 16 for the games!
The Mac list is actually still going, no sure about the Bob Stand one, BTW I was Bob Stand Bob!

Well to sum it up.... I'm back on the forum! I had a major dummy spit after the Newcastle game at the stadium and the police's attitude to us and had previously walked away from a job in law enforcement and security and did not like what I saw the Police were doing then. I had just about given the Marinators up, when I thought long and hard and realised I missed the atmosphere of bay 16 too much. I was coaxed by some former workmates into going to the Sydney game, and saw the crowd they pulled and more importantly, the Marinators giving their all for the Mariners. Also very impressed by the very enthusiastic response the players gave the Marinators at the end of the game, and thought, hell, I should be there! Kudos also to guys/girls like auburnmariner, marinermick, wyomingtiger, fish, goldenboy and mscanada. Their collective wit and enthusiasm for the Marinators and Mariners really are a bonus to the groups. I have missed the chant leadership of the likes of froggy and AM, the great comraderie of the group and all the characters in it. So, from 16 October I will be back to the Kendall and Bay 16. It's not often I am talked around a decison but there's always exceptions. Will shout AM, MM, WT, GB and Fish a drink when I see them next, OK P.S. Pieman: Been to your Tuggerah shop today and paid $15 for the bus trip to Newcastle (1 seat). Gave my name and number.

G'day all, Baggins here. I like cheese wheels. I've moved into WT's place due to my hatred of Sydney, and am looking forward to my first Mariners game this weekend. I lived on the coast a while ago and it is good to be back. I've got a spot on the bus booked, a case of beer, and i'm ready to go f***ing mental.

It's true, this guy moved in last week. Like he said he is a long time coastie, moved back here because he hated living in Sydney so bad, and even played a season at Wyoming.
You'll have to ask him on Sunday why he is called Baggins.
Welcome to the forum mate!

G'day all I've been to a few Mariners home games now (Two regular season games {against Melbourne and Perth}, as well as the WCC double header and final) as well as the Sydney-Adelaide game but i have a bit of a dilemma ! That dilemma is that i do not know who to support in the A-League . I am from and live in Sydney (NorthWest area) but do not really feel much for them at the moment. I guess perhaps i was hoping that a Sydney team was goin to play out of a venue a bit closer to where i live (Parramatta or Homebush f.ex). The fact that Sydney have promoted themselves as the "glamour club" and seem to have money and publicity to burn doesn't really sit well with me either as i have always been a bit of a fan of the underdog. Newcastle was perhaps the other option but i find that it is a bit of a hike, especially by Train as i have to change trains and it takes me a fair bit of time to get to Newy that way (the price of petrol + the fact i like to have a few drinks b4, during and after games means i prefer not to drive these days). Also from what i have read both on this forum and the SFC one, and from what i have seen on TV, their fans (well the few they have ) in general seem to be knobs with little sense of fan culture who only cheer when they are winning By now you are probably thinking "Why has this guy not become a mariners fan already?" and i guess i'm asking myself the same thing. Maybe it is the fact that i don't have that many links to the Central Coast (i've never lived there and my only link is my Grandparents who live in the Tuggerah Lakes area --- so i've have a fair few visits up there over the years ---- some stays could almost be considered to be (very) "temporary residences"), --- and which most of the supporters seeming to reside on the coast or in either the Lake Macquarie area or the very northern suburbs of Sydney, maybe i get this silly idea in my head that i'm some sort of outsider who should be supporting Sydney FC. I've also had one or two problems with CCLC staff on the few visits i've had in the club which doesn't help either. So now that i've told u my thoughts, i guess it is up to u mariners punters to try and convince me to become a fully fledged fan rather than a general fan of the A-League who stands on the fringes of Bay 16 taking in the atmosphere which is what i am doing currently (doing the same with Sydney's Bay 23 Cove atm too). Perhaps think of me as a football player/fan/sponsor who is shopping around for a club and who has a few offers but needs something that is going to sway them in a particular direction I just hope that which ever way i go, i can maintain a positive relationship with the supporters of the other clubs and be able to share a drink before/after the game without incident. I am a fan of the A-League and its success first and foremost (esp at this stage) and to be honest i'd love to meet and chat to some of the players in the A-League that don't play for CCM or SFC; the likes of Geoffrey Claeys, Archie Thompson, Richard Kitzbichler, Mateo Corbo, Richard Johnson, Jonty Richter, Alex Brosque etc.... because these sorts of players are good for the league in terms of talent and excitement and most have significant experience playing in europe which IMO would make for some interesting discussions. Anyway there is some food for thought and sorry if my post (my first on these boards) was a little longwinded. I just had a lot on my mind that i felt i needed to say thats all.

(a lot snipped) Mate, it is a bit like falling in love ... you either relate or you don't, and sometimes overanalysing doesn't help. I live in Sydney, in Epping, and could have gone for Sydney, but for reasons (some of which are like yours) I couldn't and I saw what was growing on the Coast. I made a commitment and started this forum. I know many, many faces around the Stadium from Spirit days and they aren't all from the Coast either. The H Getz went to Ursus's Normo. Look on this forum at some of our locations. Obviously some other Sydney siders have taste! Follow your heart, but there is no shame in just being a fan of football either - the game needs them too - I was for 30 years - one day however I realised it wasn't enough and some nice blokes in Newcastle made it easy to be a Breakers fan, and then a Rowdie!! If you choose I hope we do the same.

Agree with Kev - follow your heart.
Attend a few games for each club your interested in (which by the sounds of it you have) and depending on what buzz you get from them make your mind up. Sydney and the Mariners have the better atmospheres in my opinion.
In relation to having a drink pre and post match, we always have a few in the CCLC before with away fans if they are attending, and afterwards in the sports bar or post match function for those who are members. There's never been any incidents!
We are a good bunch of lads (and a few ladies) and we would love to see you at a Mariners game in the near future!

just wait til we win the a-league. then that might persuade who u support. but like u said. id rule newcastle out. arseholes, most of em. sydney dont need anymore support. they seem to have enough flowing out of people wallets. i used to be a newcastle supporter in the NSL. but at the 1st home game against them. i was in yellow. IM IN LOVE! CMON YOU YELLOW!
