Singo to lure Yorke By Cameron Bell
March 04, 2007 12:00
Article from: Font size: + - Send this article: Print Email THE man who lured glamour girls Paris Hilton and Tara Reid to Australia could emerge as the key figure in bringing Dwight Yorke back to the A-League.
Businessman John Singleton, a Mariners board member, would happily fork out to ensure the soccer superstar finishes his career in Gosford.
Singleton's interest came as The Sunday Telegraph learnt of Yorke's burning desire to return to the A-League. The man who guided Sydney to the inaugural title has another year to run on his contract with Sunderland after being squeezed out of Australia in controversial circumstances in September last year.
Yorke is seriously contemplating a return, but only after helping secure a Premier League spot for his current club.
After his exit from Sydney FC - a move that Yorke said "completely gutted'' him - Singleton said the star would be a sensational acquisition.
"(Mariners coach) Lawrie McKinna is a champion bloke and I'd do anything to help him if he rang me about it,'' Singleton said yesterday.
"If Lawrie thought that it was a good idea, yeah, I'd back it. I think it would be great and he'd certainly put bums on seats. Lawrie does a great job with the Mariners and I would listen to any proposal he's got that's going to help his team.''
Yorke's closest mate at Sydney FC, defender Iain Fyfe, said that the former Manchester United star sorely missed Australia's lifestyle.
"He really does miss it out here and I wouldn't be surprised if you see him back in the A-League next year or the year after,'' Fyfe said.
"I speak to him about once a week and I am always telling him how great the weather is and how there are girls everywhere, just to rub it in.
"I know that he has a year left at Sunderland. And if they do make it back to the Premier League next year it would be 50-50 as to whether he would go back to that level.
"He might want a final send-off in the premiership or he may opt for lifestyle and come back here because he's certainly got nothing left to prove over there.
"Dwight's done everything in the Premiership with Manchester United.
"Either way, I certainly don't think we've seen the last of him in the A-League.''
When Yorke returned to England last September after being forced out of Sydney, who pocketed more than $500,000 from his transfer, Sunderland were struggling under new coach Roy Keane, Yorke's former United captain.
But the club have remained unbeaten in eight games since January. They have risen from near the bottom of the table to be in strong contention for promotion to the Premier League and Yorke has been at the forefront - having captained the team recently because of injuries.
Their surge has seen Sunderland rise to fourth on the ladder, but a win overnight against West Bromich Albion would have secured second place.
The top two teams from the league are automatically promoted while there are playoffs for the remaining spot.
article seems to jump the gun a bit. Sunderland did beat WBA last night, with Dwight Yorke scoring. WBA are hot shit at the moment, and i think those two teams will get the automatic spots. so yorke still has the goods, but he wouldnt turn down prem football.
would love singo to do it, but doubt it will happen, but ofcourse there will be questions as him to being good enough. i think he would great still.

Fyfe.
I think there can be no doubt that he's still got game if he can operate instramentally in the championship. He would be awesome in terms of sponsors and ticket sales. He would be great for publicity in Australia and spreading the word of the A-league overseas too.
IMO, it would be a good singing. So I hope Sundlefish don't make it back to the premiership, but I was hoping that anyway.
Fyfe.

dwight was an "ok" player at sydney fc, his passing and distribution was top notch but he often was found taking really deep positions on the park and didnt see the ball at all for long periods which led people to calling him lazy... personally i think itd be great for him to come here, i dont see it happening but itd be good in terms of building the clubs profile and media exposure and expanding the fan base (plus rubbing it into Budget FC i guess)... he would be a good aquisition in marketing terms more than playing terms
and i agree, if he were to come put him up front as striker - people want to see marquee players scoring goals

If Singo wants to throw the cash around surely we can find someone who still has more to give than Yorke. Maybe that money would be better spent on two or three players to add depth to the squad.

Maybe that money would be better spent on two or three players to add depth to the squad. doesn't work that way with the marquee system. you can either spend a lot of money on one player... or not. the rest have to fit under the cap. AFAIK, we're using as much of the cap as is practical (i.e. we keep space for short termers in order to allow for injuries), so any other money necessarily goes onto one player alone.

Come on man...do your job! I am handing that one over to the Spelling Squad. It's a growing and active force this, the force Force Against Language Abuse - FALA Grammar Police - protecting against mangled syntax, dodgy conjugation, scattergun punctuation and also punishing severely those who feel the need to constantly split infinitives.* Spelling Squad - acting swiftly and with extreme prejudice against those whose only contact with correct spelling comes when they hit 'F7' in MS Word. Poetry Patrol - a latte sipping bunch who mete out retribution against those who rhyme incorrectly, miscount syllables and fail to use effectively rhythmic devices and rhetorical flourishes. Applications to join any one of these three wings of FALA can be made at your local branch office. * There's a joke in that last one for the nerds.

Wouldn't Dwight want the captaincy? IMO I think this would be a good signing. Especially if the Greg Owens deal fell through.

And then there is the lesser known Department of Redundancy Department. Don't put your PIN number into an ATM machine if they're around Re: Yorke, I thought he only wanted to play midfield and wouldn't go up front for SFC? Seems like we have a stacked midfield already.. although whenever Dwight Yorke FC got near the ball I used to always hold my breath because I knew something was about to happen!

I think the positive to come out of this story is that Singo will spend money on whoever Lawrie wants.

I think the positive to come out of this story is that Singo will spend money on whoever Lawrie wants. Yeah that is a big positive. If Singo is prepared to fork out the big bucks to pay for a Marquee player, I think there probaly better options around then All-night Dwight. However saying that, I don't think many A-league clubs would turn down the oppurtunity to have Dwight Yorke play for them.

I tend to think that we have a decent midfield roster as it is. Dwight upfront maybe a proposition, but he did seem more dangerous when he was with Sydney, in that midfield role. I respect Singo's willingness to put his money where his heart his, Lawrie must be surely humbled to have a bloke like Singo to have as a friend....but I can't help thinking that if Singo was to put some serious $$ up, Lawrie would opt for something different.
