2007 PRE-SEASON CUP - WEEK 1 PREVIEW
Round One (1) of the 2007 Pre-Season Cup gets underway this weekend with the Hyundai A-League's newest club, the Wellington Phoenix, to make their competitive debut against the Central Coast Mariners at Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford (Saturday 14th July, Kick-Off 6:00pm AEST). To mark this historic event, the Central Coast Mariners have opened up their gates and allowed free entry to all spectators, with supporters encouraged to provide a gold coin donation to support local charity 2GO’s Give Me 5 For Kids.
The first match of the round will kick-off at the Port Macquarie Regional Stadium where the Newcastle Jets will host Perth Glory (Saturday 14th July, Kick-Off 2:30pm AEST), with Queensland Roar lining up against Sydney FC later that evening at the Maroochydore Soccer Club on the Sunshine Coast (14th July, Kick-Off 7:00pm AEST).
In a re-match of the Hyundai A-League 2007 Grand Final, Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United will go head-to-head at the Aurora Stadium in Launceston (Sunday 15th July, Kick-Off 1:00pm AES) to complete the opening round's matches. With city and state pride at stake, Adelaide United will be looking to overturn the 5-0 defeat they received the last time these two teams met, whilst Melbourne Victory will commence their campaign to defend the Premiership and Championship titles they claimed last season.
In a change from the previous two Pre-Season cup competitions, all group phase matches will be subject to the bonus point rule that will see teams gain one (1) bonus point if they score two (2) goals in a match, two (2) bonus points if they score three (3) goals and three (3) bonus points if they score four (4) or more goals. The rule is applied to both teams irrespective of the result, whilst the traditional allocation of points will still be applied (three (3) points for a win; one (1) point for a draw; zero (0) points for a loss).
With the Hyundai A-League season only forty-one (41) days away, all eight clubs will be eager to get some much needed competitive match practice under their belts in the lead-up to the season opening on the weekend of the 24-26 August 2007.
