Herbert happy despite Phoenix defeat By FRED WOODCOCK - The Chronicle | Monday, 16 July 2007
The concession of two "sloppy" goals in an opening 2-0 Pre-Season Cup loss to the Central Coast Mariners wasn't enough to wipe a smile off Wellington Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert's face after the club's first official outing.
As far as he was concerned it was mission accomplished in Gosford on Saturday - no major injuries, plenty of chances created, combinations starting to form, a good style of play and a respectable scoreline in front of 8136 spectators at Bluetongue Stadium.
"There were pluses - fitness-wise we coped, some of the football was good, and though we conceded two sloppy goals we actually played very well.
"We created some great chances, we were good to watch and I can't really say much about the finishing because at this stage we haven't really worked on that."
Missing seven players and reduced to 10 men for 37 minutes after defender Steven O'Dor saw red for a second bookable offence, Herbert said they "still got lots of the ball, dictated for long periods, and got players forward".
Though Herbert admitted he "never likes to lose", he declared himself "more than happy" five weeks out from their first A-League match against Melbourne.
"I think we're going to have a really good year and we've got a decent platform to build on, but we're not going to pretend we're like the other seven franchises.
"There's a lot of work to do in the next five-six weeks to bring them together.
"We haven't had the luxury of two years of combinations."
Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna offered some encouragement for the newcomers.
"I don't think they'll be too worried, they showed enough glimpses tonight. They're big and strong and they're going to cause problems."
Herbert said goalkeeper Glen Moss, strikers Vaughan Coveny and Brownlie, and midfielders Jeremy Christie and Michael Ferrante all performed well.
Striker Shane Smeltz, playing out of position on the right flank, was "very creative" as was Brazilian midfielder Daniel, whose distribution to the frontrunners was impressive.
Moss was busy and a string of athletic saves stopped a blowout after they trailed 2-0 at halftime - Mariners captain Alex Wilkinson opening the scoring in the third minute and Adam Kwasnik doubling the lead in the 32nd.
The Phoenix created several opportunities but lacked the polished touch of the more cohesive Mariners.
They didn't drop their heads after O'Dor's dismissal, however, and Daniel nearly got them on the board with a 60th minute freekick.
Felipe got a run off the bench as did teenage striker Greg Draper, who was forced to play at right back after O'Dor's ejection and Brazilian defender Cleberson had hobbled off with a minor knee injury.
Cleberson is expected to be fit for Sunday's match against Sydney FC at Newtown Park, while captain Ross Aloisi is available after serving his one-match suspension. Herbert is also hopeful injured defender Karl Dodd will play.
Sydney drew 0-0 with Queensland Roar in the other group B match.
Meanwhile, Herbert is in negotiations with former Liverpool shot stopper Chris Pile to become the Phoenix's goalkeeping coach.

I like Jackson#4's idea of Viddy on the right with Boogs starting in the middle. I thought Boogs looked good when he came on. However, Viddy is all class, I would not be writing him off yet. His covering in the middle when he plays wide gets missed by many.
He has also played on the right before - as part of a three man defence. Anyone remember Nov 16th 2005?

Anyone remember Nov 16th 2005? in a three man defence you tend to play more central than a four man defence therefore there is less scope to go forward and you basically play as a stopper putting viddy on the right would be a disaster because: - outside midfielders are generally faster and viddy would not have the pace to contain them - as an outside fullback you are expected to attack hard and come back and do your defensive duties - viddy doesn't have the pace or fitness to achieve this - viddy's organisational skills are less effective as an outside player
