Nothing will divert Ricki Herbert's attention from his side's A-League debut on August 26, certainly not the Pre-Season Cup starting next weekend.
The Phoenix kick off their pre-season campaign at Central Coast next Saturday but coach Herbert has little concern for the scoreline.
"Results are secondary," he said. "It's not often I say that but we can't afford to change tack when it comes to things like our fitness and relationship between the players because we have to be up and running on August 26. We're not like a Melbourne, who can just largely cut and paste their team from last season. We are behind the other teams."
Herbert could be without as many as six of his 19 players next Saturday, with skipper Ross Aloisi suspended and vice-captain Tim Brown a major doubt with a groin injury. Mark Paston (foot), Vince Lia (knee), Richard Johnson (Achilles) and Karl Dodd (back) are also doubtful. The three remaining Brazilians - Felipe, Cleberson and George - arrive in Wellington today and Herbert will assess whether they are fit enough to play on Saturday.
He might need trialists or some of the New Zealand under-20s to make up numbers. The Phoenix face Central Coast, Sydney and Queensland in their Pre-Season Cup pool. Their squad still has vacancies for two under-20 players and a right back.
* Dan Keat (knee) is a major doubt for New Zealand's final pool match against Mexico tomorrow morning at the Under-20 World Cup.
Defender Phil Edginton will miss the match through suspension and is likely to be replaced by Jack Pelter.
New Zealand have little chance of progressing to the second round after defeats to Portugal (2-0) and Gambia (1-0), although the highly-rated Mexicans are expected to field a weakened side, given they have already qualified for the next round.

Wellington look in all sorts already.
I want us to win but i do not want to humiliate them. They need good early results to get the crowds in.

Judging by pre-season and given a full deck I think the starting lineup may well go like this:
Danny Clarky Viddy/Boogs Wilko Heff Tommy Mile Gumps Browny Saso Nik
Trotty Boogs/Viddy Osman (if fit) Hutch Kwas
I pencilled Boogs in because I am not sure how prepared Viddy is fitness wise. I suppose it is pre-season and will probably start.

Wellington Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert is battling to cobble together a full squad for Saturday's first Pre-Season Cup match against the Central Coast Mariners in Gosford with seven players unavailable for selection.
Goalkeeper Mark Paston, midfielders Tim Brown, Richard Johnson and Vince Lia and defender Karl Dodd are all out through injury, while captain Ross Aloisi will miss the match after carrying over a one-match suspension following Adelaide's 6-0 grand final loss to Melbourne last season.
Striker Costa Barbarouses is in camp with the New Zealand under-17 team.
That leaves Herbert with 13 players including the Brazilian trio of George, Cleberson and Felipe, who all arrived and trained in Wellington yesterday, but they are yet to be registered.
"We've just got to work through the registration process and those clearances have got to come from Brazil," Herbert said.
"But even with those three that's 13, and we're probably going to have to gather one or two from somewhere else just to help us through week one."
It is likely Herbert will call in two of the national under-20 side should they exit the World Cup in Canada this morning, but they too would have to be registered quickly.

Hopefully they are ready for the season proper. Would not complain with a few goals going our way to get the season going though

Finally, another match thread counting down the days until a game. It's been too long since the Adelaide Game!!!
Danny Clarky...Viddy...Wilko...Heff .................Mile................ ......Kwas...Tommy...Browny. .......Petrovski...Mrdja.........
Trotty Boogs Gumps Hutch
I really can't see Wellington winning this game. 3-0 to the Mariners with goals by Sasho and and 2 for Mrdja is my prediction.

I wouldnt be fussed if we won 1-0 to be honest. An indifferent pre season with rain delays and the odd bout of the flu going through the squad makes for an interesting next couple of days fitness wise for the boys affected. With the weather the way it is there might not be to many sessions this week.

Even Ben can get it wrong. He had his mind on what he would get up to in Bangkok! Saso had to accept Sasho being used so people would pronounce it properly, but it is Saso - as used in Macedonia, and in Oz football media for years until Sydney FC couldn't cope. Nik, asked media some time ago through the club for his correct spelling to be used.

Strongly doubt that Owens will play. He has had minor surgery off season, hasn't played a game yet in pre season trials, and Hutch and Tommy have a greater claim having shaken off their last season's blues, played trials and appear fit. ----------Danny--------------- Clark Wilko Vidmar Heff ------------Mile--------------- --Kwas--Tommy-----Brown ----Petrovksi Mrdja-------
Res: Trott Boogs Hutch Gumps Porter
I feel we should play Heff straight up, and if that's the case, then Browny should be his left midfield. Brown played left back last year, his defence is good, and he can cover for Heff when Dean goes forward. They also have a good understanding with each other, and the combo of Heff & Brown works well. Also, by putting Hutch on the bench, we can utilise his dual role (upfront or left midfield). Hutch also interacts well with Heff and Browny. And no, no going soft on the new venture. If the Mariners win, I want them trying to bang in goals til the final whistle. I want the team to erase the memories of last season, I want them to bang so many goals in they find it a routine!(Instead of spraying them wide high or anywhere else)

Would like to see Boogs & Wilko given a chance to play together in central defence, Heff & Brown to play on the left with Heff getting forward from time to time like he did in V1, and Brown covering back. Definitely Mile & Gumps in the middle and Tommy linking midfield and attack. Not 100% sure about the strikeforce yet, but saw encouraging signs from Hutch against Blacktown, so he may be worth a run.
Danny Clarky Boogs Wilko Heff Gumps Mile Brownie Tommy Hutch Saso
Subs: Trott, Vidmar, Osman, Nik, Kwas

I can Vouch for the spelling of Saso, my wife is macedonian, and from wollongong! (she is hoping there is a family connection, knowing them there may well be). SASO it is in the native tounge. Sasho, is more for the girls from what i have been told.....so dont call him Sasho!
I argree with you Pete, would be good to see the boys show n mercy, and play as well as we can. Score as many as we can, really start hard, and erase last year from there memory banks. The phoenix can rise somewhere else than our homeground.
