It was reported on Today's Football Fever that the Mariners are negotiating with Ahmed Elrich. There is no story yet on the website to link to.
The story said that there is room in the Mariners cap to fit him in.
With Ahmed we would be the best attacking team in the comp for sure.

Mariners on hunt for Roo Elrich By David Davutovic and Greg Danvers September 04, 2007 TITLE-chasing Central Coast is plotting an audacious swoop for the Socceroos' unsettled Barclays Premier League wing Ahmad Elrich.
They may also face competition from Wellington Phoenix and overseas, with Elrich having received lucrative offers from the Middle East plus two trials in Turkey.
The Mariners were last night making enquiries into Elrich's fitness in light of the serious knee injury which has blighted his last 12 months.
Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna, who was assistant coach with NSL club Parramatta when Elrich burst onto the scene, said he would be a valuable asset.
"I coached him all those years ago and he's a good lad. He's potentially brilliant with his pace and he'd fit in well with the way we play football," McKinna said.
Fulham are understood to have agreed to release the 26-year-old and will pay out most of his contract, which was due to expire at the end of the season.
The Mariners are believed to have enough room in the salary cap and have a spare spot on the list.
Elrich has been sidelined since September last year, when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in Australia's Asian Cup qualifying loss in Kuwait.
Elrich's Australian representative Tony Relis said Elrich, who narrowly missed out on a place in the 2006 World Cup squad, was favouring a return to the A-League.
"Ahmad would take a significant pay cut if he returned to the A-League but it's going to be a football decision," he said.
Meanwhile McKinna has revealed how on-fire striker Nik Mrdja is still having to work constantly on the knee that has left his A-League career on hold for most of the past two seasons.
While the Mariners squad toiled away in their first session of the new week yesterday Mrdja was cooling his heels in the pool.
"We don't want to get to a stage where, because we're training him the same as everyone else, he needs a week or two off," McKinna said yesterday.
"Monday is usually a hard day so we ease him through - he does a swimming session and then he's right for the rest of the week.
"We'd rather just nurse him through so as the season goes on he gets stronger. It's usually just the first session of the week - his knee gets a wee bit tender. We have to monitor him so that we don't load him up too much."

Bit of a gamble with his year lay off
And why change a winning team? We already have enough depth IMO, why would we need another attacking midfielder? Who would you drop?
Waste of money I say

I agree with Mick - we have kept one spot open and apparently kept space in the cap for an opportunity just like this.
He has Socceroo caps, and right wing isn't the strongest area in our squad.
He has been out for a long time but Lawrie knows him from Parra, and taking a pay cut to come back here he would play with a point to prove and trying to resurrect his career - good motivation to perform well. Great signing if it happens imo.
What Bear says is interesting though - guarantee that the majority of Sydney fans would be hailing him as the saviour if they were linked, whereas we are so stable and solid that we question whether we need him, and if he does come, he could take time to get up to speed and work his way into the team rather than be thrown in and told to turn a team around.

Obviously he could be the buy of the season, even Jardel could be the buy of the season, but its a big gamble, and he wont be signing some $35,000 a year deal either.

before his knee injury elrich was playing premier league and representing australia mcmaster was where? In the Football Manager 2005 handbook as the sample 'player screen' for one...what are the chances? But yeah he was struggling to get out of Leeds reserves, and I would guess he was signed because he was a Coastie. Ahmad would be a known quantity, and if Lawrie can pick Jedi out of the state league I'm sure someone he has coached who has actually played for the Socceroos will come good.

Dont get me wrong, if he comes, and is good for the team, then bring it on. But just because someone played maybe 1 game and a handful from the bench in the EPL and for the socceroos 1 year ago, and has been injured ever since, dose not mean they will be great now.

Wasn't at Leeds when he came, was at Sweden somewhere I think.
And Bear: Jamie McMaster has ZERO Socceroos caps, so is quite different to Elrich. However I agree, don't know if it's worth it but I wouldn't say no.

It is quite funny how when Jardel came to Newcastle the mariners fans were saying how stupid it is. Yet placed with a similar situation (Elrich) you think its a great idea. Sure Jardel = drugs but Elrich = up himself ar$e yes infinitely better player the crap one we have, but its a gamble for you guys he has had his fair share of problems with injury and disagreements with coaches etc...

even so, what will Jardel bring to the Australian game over the course of the next few years!? Ahmad can lift the quality by adding another young socceroo to the HAL, endevouring for a spot in international team!
