It was reported on Today's Football Fever that the Mariners are negotiating with Ahmed Elrich. There is no story yet on the website to link to. The story said that there is room in the Mariners cap to fit him in. With Ahmed we would be the best attacking team in the comp for sure. Hmm ... not with you on this one MM ... I truly thought this was about Tarek, not his dimwitted brother! WE have no room in numbers unless Lawrie wants to go to 23 signed, and I wouldn't waste it on Ahmad.

If there is a free spot in the squad and enough room left in the cap, then we should fill the squad. This time last week, I would agree with you saying we should leave a free spot. However since the FFA have changed the rules regarding player replacement, IMO we should fill the squad.

I'm with Greenpole, as long as CCM don't have to pay out his contract and incurr a transfer fee. Sign him for a shitload less money and with his injury concerns then have the contract include bonuses of 'paid if you play', that way the incentive is there for him to keep himself in nick and improve his game.

I think it would also be a good move for Elrich as well. If he's not playing in Europe, he should come home and play week-in week-out to help him get a Socceroo spot. He is only 26 after all.
Heffernan is the perfect example. It only took him 1 a0league game to get a call-up.

I would be bringing in a right sided defender though - not a right sided sort of attacking show pony! Sorry, saw enough of him with Parra Power.

I think if we have the money and the space then go for it. So what if he's had a couple of long term injuries, look at Mrdja he's spent the whole of the first two seasons on the sidline now he's kicking ass... Why leave a spot open it would be better to fill the spot and get the team sorted so theres no mid-season disruptions wiith a new player coming in and taking games to find form. If he doesnt preform then put Owens or someone else in the starting 11. Lawrie is good enough to get him back to socceroo level, plus he knows him and knows what he is like. I think we would be stupid not to sign him.

I think this is a continuation of Lawrie's rejuvenation of the squad. Out went SP, Crawley, Sully, Spencer to be replaced by the younger crew of Sasho (relative to SP) , Trotty, Owens and Mile. This rejuvenation of what was a realtively old squad in V1 is setting us up for the future.
I'm not a great fan of Elrich, however, if he can recapture his form he is still young enough to be a great player for us.

Would be a brilliant player for us but who would make way for him. We already have class cooling their heals on the bench...Tommy and Owens.
We would be better off buying a quality right back who can also play in central defence.

Fulham are understood to have agreed to release the 26-year-old and will pay out most of his contract, which was due to expire at the end of the season. So now we don't have to pay a transfer, I fail to see why we shouldn't go for him.

he should just come home, it didnt work for him in Korea or in England... his only other hope is for a lower league like Romania or come home to the A-League and be in contention for the Socceroos

Does anyone know why australians go to Romania to play?? it seems very pointless and the league isn't very competitive even though steua bucharest are in the Champs league

I actually think we are ok down the right - Kwas, Tommy, Owens, Osman and Gumps can all play there and do a good job..............as someone else mentioned, more depth at RB would be nice, but I wouldn't waste my last spot on a RB.
If it happens then it's a good opportunity for Elrich as people have mentioned, but I think it's unlikely.
Can't say I've seen enough of him to warrant a good opinion on how much he will offer us, but at the end of the day whatever is best for the club Lawrie, Lyall and Peter will do.

1/4 of our whole squad can play in the right midfield position, so how is another player that can play that position going to add anything to our squad, other than to make the other people who can play that position pissed off that they have to compete with a guy thats played f*** all the last 2 years?
The 1 and only position we have no specialist player in is right back. Sign an out and out right back, or no-one.

Difference being able to play that position to playing it very well or even having a specialist there. It is what makes good teams great. The only two specialists we have at right midfield is Ossie and Kwassy. With Kwassy being utilised on the left and Ossie brilliantly reinvented himself as a right back we still don't have an overly effective right midfield. Gumpy has done an excellent job but tends to drift towards the middle.
