Any word of the injuries to the 2 other first choice centre backs which have given Meggsi and Spiranovic a chance? Is it Glauber and Nikl? Would you say that Meggsi will be sent back to the bench when they come good, or....? Well Glauber was the unquestioned first player on that position. We have to see how fast he can be back in shape. But Meggsi is anyway very close to the first 11. He is maybe No. 2,5 currently Nikl is in Nuremberg since 1998 and he made two very good appearances against Stuttgart and Gladbach last Saturday and Tuesday. Due to his age the club tries to give him a special contract to be captain of the second team so that they promote to the then reformed third league. Which is very important to get young players and have them play on a high level. And he would also be good for leading young players. Spiranovic is currently THE talent in Nuremberg and our coach nearly loves him like his own son. He will get all the time but also all the chances he needs. However there is also Andreas Wolf on that position who also evolved to one of the top defenders of the Bundesliga. He is very close to the National team, but has no cap or nomination yet. If he keeps that level it will only be a matter of time. To make a long story short it is currently very hard to decide who is the central defender pair for Nuremberg. I think it is great to have that choice and you need 4 players who could play that position. Especially if we would really qualify for the UEFA cup which is not only a dream anymore. Although it is very hard to become fifth in the League. Also the cup winner where we still take part is qualified for the UEFA cup. We will see EDIT: you asked about the injuries of Nikl and Glauber. NIkl should be back this or next week. Glauber may be out for only one match more. I don't have exact details on that.

But I think he got food poisoning as he is to miss out on the Socceroos match. Read that on the World Game website somewhere...

From theworldgame.com.au
Coming into the squad are midfielder Jacob Burns, defenders Jon McKain and Shane Stefanutto and goalkeeper Brad Jones, although Michael Petkovic will replace Schwarzer.
Another player will be drafted from the Olyroos squad, with midfielders Neil Kilkenny, Nick Ward and James Wesolowski in the running for a spot.
Looks like arnold wont give Spiranovic a call up. What an idiot.

I wouldn't be too worried about it mate. Croatia have been trying to shmooze him for ages, I'm pretty sure I remember hearing he's already told them to go and get stuffed.
Still, I wouldn't have complained if he was called up for the Denmark match. But I guess "locking players in" isn't really on the top of all managers' minds. Personally, I find it a ridiculous attitude, but whatever.
From a purely squad selection perspective, perhaps the fact that he's only got, what, 46 minutes of top level park time under his belt had something to do with it.

We could have lost the like of kewell and viduka, and probably would have without them being seen as a good talent, and then locked in.
I think given his age, and where he is playing, and the feelings of his coach about him, it is only prudent to give him a run. It is not like We are fitting him into our best squad. 7 injuries certainly makes room.

Plus, if he's not called up now, you'd have to suspect he won't be called up for the Uruguay/Argies matches, or the Asian Cup. Which would put a call-up off for some time. Still, I can't quite put my finger on it, it may be prudent - especially in this day and age - but there's something about capping players when defection to another country is mentioned that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and in a way devalues the shirt. And things have changed, I don't really see why playing for Croatia over Australia could be considered appealing or a good career move anymore. I like to think that thought crossed Simubitch's mind on June 22. ;D I admit though, I could just be a naive idealist.

If you dont get a run in the oz team, and dont look like a call up with huge chunks of it missing. If you had dreams to play at a world cup, croatia would be an option worth considering. If the croats are after our players, they should have some quality. It is in our interest to keep them.
And i dont think he will dissapear, so it is really just the start of his socceroos career. Wont devalue it. I get the point in doing for players willy nilly. From lower leagues and divisions in europe. But if he gets chosen to start against bayern in the german league at his age, he must have something to him. Enough to warrant Arnies attention. Since the croats have noticed.

However there was nothing in the German Press about it until now. BTW Spiranovic was shown yesterday on local Bavarian TV. He said that he is still stunned that he played in that match. Especially after watching al these great players together with his friends during World cup last summer and now he even played against them. He probably was even too shy to ask for his opponent's jersey

Ontong was here with Spiranovic in October. Who is Vidosic? What position does he play? What is SBS? Is there a link somewhere? Thanks in advance

Vidosic plays for the Queensland Roar and is a central attacking midfielder. He scored two goals against us when we lost 3-2 to them just before christmas. SBS is a national public tv channel here in Australia. They have a weekly 2 hour football show and also hold the broadcasting rights to the FIFA World Cup in this country. Check this link for more information: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SBS_TV

I haven't seen the match, but it was quite lucky, but we have won 2:0 in Bochum. Both Saenko 88' and 91' after Bochum missed 3 big chances, but we had a few good ones in the first half. Michael played 90 minutes. The long leg of the law
