Teen ready to swap Geelong for Germany
GEELONG teenager Matthew Spiranovic is poised to become the latest Australian recruit to the "Kangaroo colony" being established up at leading Bundesliga side FC Nurnberg.
The 18-year-old, 192-centimetre centre-back, who played in a World Club Championship qualifier for Melbourne Victory when he was 16, successfully has completed a two-week trial with the table-topping Nurnberg and is confident a deal will be sealed within 48 hours.
Nurnberg is home to three other Australians — World Cup striker Josh Kennedy, defender Michael Beauchamp and former A-League defender Dean Heffernan — and Spiranovic is looking forward to linking up with his more experienced countrymen.
"It looks as if I will be going to Germany. Since my youngest days, I have said I wanted to play overseas and I am not looking at knocking it back if I get the chance," he said. "Getting the chance to develop my game at a big club in a country like Germany would be fantastic."
Spiranovic has played eight times for the Young Socceroos (Australian under-20 side) and represented Australia at the under-17 World Cup in Peru last year.
When Victory coach Ernie Merrick was building his squad in early 2005, Spiranovic (then at the Victorian Institute of Sport) played for the Victory in its first competitive match — the World Club Championship qualifier against Adelaide.
He barely put a foot wrong in a game that finished scoreless after extra time, but was not selected as one of the club's three under-20 players for its first squad. He then went to the Australian Institute of Sport and the national junior squad.

I know nothing of Ontong. The coaches have a taste for Aussies now do they? I have no idea. Maybe it still has to do with the connection of our coach to Andre Gumprecht. It's also better for teams like ours to look for young players in Australia and other "smaller" soccer countries. Because the big clubs get all the good players from Europe, South America and Africa. They often get them already when they are 15 or even younger. Apparently Spiranovic got an offer and we are really excited about him, because he made a great match. Although it was only 36 minutes that he played. But hed did it with so much routine and confidence. I haven't heard anything about an offer for Ontong. Thanks to all the others about gathering information about those two Young Socceroos! It's much appreciated

When we played the tards on sunday night, the commentators were saying that the clubs will meet in January and that Heff and meggsy could be back by the end of the regular season if Nurnberg don't want them.

Its the Bundelsiga with world class players just being involved with a club would be great for their careers.

It's a shame though that the one club that picked them up goes for a surprise run for the title.
It's not like the coach is going to drop defenders to give our boys a go when they are top of the comp. No offence cyberiad but if anything we should be hoping for FCN to lose a few games so Sonic and Meggsi come into contention a bit more!

What are we going to do though...pay out two current players contracts and tell them to bugger off? It'll be interesting to see exactly how the 20-man squad limit will affect their return.

The only mention from the match report at the Nurnberg site: Which I had translated at Babelfish "Cottbus smelled" ;D Original article: www.fcn.de/index.php?id=12576I assumed there'd be more enthusiasm! Perhaps there is an underlying desire to see him come back home to the CCM rather than succeed?

From all accounts it was an incredible 3 minutes, I'm happy for Meggsi, hopefully he can get the tactics down and start mastering German so he can understand the manager's jokes.

Sorry, for not giving any update since some weeks. I see you already found out that he played 3 minutes against Cottbus. I heard he made no mistake and helped to keep the 1:1. His only task was to take care of one single player, namely Kevin McKenna, but that could be hard enough, because that guy is well known for his headers However last Saturday he didn't play at all. But it was a difficult match where we played with 10 players nearly 50 minutes. So the coach had to look who needs to be substituted. Last week there was also an interview on the official page of the league: www.bundesliga.de/de/liga/clubs/1-fc-nuernberg/index.phpThere's no direct link possible, but look for the article from "28.09.2006". Michael talks about his situation and how he feels. He now thinks that he reached the level for the Bundesliga. He also mentions his impressions in his first match, that it was quite fast and intensive. He hopes that he will get more of these appearances. Most importantly for him was that he was quite unused to have training every day or even twice a day. He was asked about Australia and the league. He expects it to be improving more and more and that it is the dream for every Australian to go to Europe once Although he thinks he is the right level now he still needs to learn the language. He said he would like to understand the jokes of the coach ;D
